colr6 Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 A friend has just had the misfortune to stuff his car and the airbags have gone off. We should be able to straighten the car. My question is do I have to replace the air bags. ( from a future mot view)It's only a cheap run around but the milage he does is a lot to work and back on shit country roads which destroys cars. So want to keep the cost down as much as poss.
Admin Vista Posted February 10, 2017 Admin Report Posted February 10, 2017 I'd say yes as the air bag light will be on on the dash and I recall that that was introduced as an MOT fail. This was introduced as an MOT item in Feb 2014 An airbag fitted as original equipment must be present and not obviously defective.
colr6 Posted February 10, 2017 Author Report Posted February 10, 2017 Steering wheel should not be a problem but the passenger one would mean a dash change !
OSF Contributor Mexican Gerbil Posted February 10, 2017 OSF Contributor Report Posted February 10, 2017 Remove bulb ?
katana Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 I believe a non functioning bulb is also a fail - seen during self test at key on. A crafty 'bodge' would wire the airbag light in parallel with another so comes on then goes off - not that anyone would do that would they? 2

That is crafty, but I wouldn't do it in case the car is ever sold on to an unsuspecting buyer. I don't think they expect modern cars to be repaired after a crash - crumple zones and air bags make it uneconomic. I had a VW Polo which was someone else's cancelled order and it something like 10 air bags - in the back of the front seats, in the B-posts and C-posts.

Citroën C2 or the Renault look alike? My daughter was forever setting her light off in her C2 due to ramming bags under the seats. Ended up rewiring/relocating the harness as was fed up of re-setting it and worrying about it not going off if she had a bump.
2512pf Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 Cambus wiring? Can you bypass the air bag

Yes, sounds exactly the same. Had to use my Android Torque app the once to re-set the light, but was usually only a wiggle needed.
