ok chaps, me being a cheap skate and all that......

 

can anyone recommend a decent source of electric rad fan to go on my mex, pref from an easily found scrap car. Seem to recall I got one of an SD1 years ago but not going to find any of those in my local breakers now! If it goes sucessfully I'll do the same for the capper.

I have used Pug 405 one before now, But you can get a Brand new one from Premierwireing for 44.95, 12" and he sells on E-Bay

I've got a Pug 405 on mine. Only because years & years ago an old workmate was scrapping one so I nabbed it

IIRC, I've been told before that mk1 clio diesel fans fit. I think they're pushers too so you can hide it under the slam panel .

Just have a wonder round a scrappies with a tape measure and one of those jump-start powerpack wotsits till you find one that takes your fancy.

I have a RS Turbo fan on my Mk2 with a pinto. Works fine on that and was fine on the old 1300 as well.

Depends if you want a Pusher of puller, I used Pug 205 diesel, a compact 2 fan pusher set up, that fits over a Granada rad frame with a bit of fetteling.

when i did mine i looked into bike fans and use 2 so that i could control the cooling plus i have a dynamo and i didnt want to run the risk over draining the battery

id imagine you wire a temp switch in the circuit mate so it comes on when hot

its actually better to run them from the bottom hose as the top doesnt give an accurate reading as it is after the thermostat which only opens at a certain temperature its the same reson temp sensors are placed under the thermostat too

If you are going to fit an electric fan then I would run the power source through a relay and ideally have a thermo switch fitted into your rads bottom tank.The thermo switches are available with different heat ranges so you can select the range you want it to turn on/off.I also wired it so I can override the thermo switch just in case that goes tits up.

Ive had the Kenlowe type thermo pickup which sits inside the top hose before but I found it leaked and looked a right mess with all the tubing going to the adjustable switch.

Either go for a factory fitted (breakers yard)fan or a quality aftermarket one,dont be tempted with a cheap(chinese copy) aftermatket ones.

One last thing,if you can fit it with its surround do so,do not use these cheap mounting kits that consist of four metal pins that you have to poke through your rad,the weight of the fan will wreck the finning and cause leaks.

back some years ago we used the Cavalier thermoswitch mounted in the bottom of the radiator and either a Feiesta or Escort Mk3 fan. Don't know how thin they are on the ground now but I am thinking of fitting an electric fan in the Mk1 Capri so I asked at a local radiator specialist in Luton. He came up with the same idea so it must be still feasable. Quoted me a tenner for the pleasure of cutting a hole in the radiator and soldering a threaded nut for the switch to fit.
