I agree.

Looks like its got bundles of potential but if you are going to be paying someone else to do all the work for you, id walk away. Itll bankrupt you.

If you can do welding and mechanical yourself, go for it 👍

I can do body work repairs/respraying and bit of welding as it was my skills from motor trade for 20 years but last touch any cars since 2005!

Need garage with proper tools then I would buy it....

I don't think its unreasonable money at all for a Mk1 Escort. I haven't heard of a GXL model before so that in itself makes it a pretty unique car. Some of those interior parts like the clock in the center console would be very rare indeed. At first glance the floors look scatty but I don't think they are rusted out completely just flaky with bits of floor covering. Just by looking under the bonnet you can see the car is actually pretty sound and clean. Sure it will require a bit of welding, they all do but you clearly have that covered with experience. I would love to hear more about this GXL model in general and if you get it definitely get a restoration project thread started so we can see it all over and its progression.

(Ive just cropped your images a bit to make them easier to view)

tbh, nick and I looked at this a month ago, the guy wanted silly money at that point, the GXL is just the European version of the 1300E, with some obvious differences, it was available in both LHD and RHD, 2 and 4 door, and some late 1300Es like my blue one have the GXL designation on the body plate and do carry the same clock, which again was denoted on the body plate, if it was 2 door RHD it would be in my workshop lol, but 4 door lefty, we walked away, if your gonna take it and modify it so to speak, probably worth the 3.5k, but if you going to retain originality, its expensive as it will take years to find the correct parts, if at all, it was a rare beast to start with, now its very rare and so are the parts, even the missing spot lights are GXL specific

the clock and pod RP, are relatively easy to get, but expensive, trim virtually impossible tho

Thanks Ray, much appreciated for your views on this lefty GXL, I get to modifying any cars I owned 🥴

I’ll contact guy to see if he can lower the price as much as I can 🙏🏻
