Oval Evolution - Ford Oval Badges - Blimey how many differences are there?!

Recommended Posts

Who would have thought getting a matching Ford oval badge would be so difficult. There are so many differences. The badges for Mk2 Escorts are 115mm x 45mm. The originals discolour very easy and costs a fortune if you ever see them for sale. The top two are originals the top one a new replacement I bought in the 1980's for the second one that came off the car but even then there are thickness differences with the new replacement slightly more domed. In the late 80s Ford replaced the early badges with a new better quality version but with very squared off sides. (The third one shown in the photo). The current ones don't have a clear acrylic front at all just a domed painted badge. (Fourth Badge). Not so much now as Ford have clamped down on that sort of thing but there were replicas too like the 5th badge but if you look closely they don't centre the word Ford properly.

Other later versions have the rim sloping downwards.

There are some pretty reasonable versions I have found for sale in the UK. But again different. The Ford writing in the middle isn't flat but more rounded and three dimensional under the clear acrylic.

Its messing with my head and seeing Ford badges everywhere. Lesson is to always buy more than one badge. Buy in pairs and at least one spare in case one gets damaged. Trying to match some of these older badges can prove near on impossible.

Found your topic mind blowing so went in search to see if I could help, what you doing with it when you find the exact match?

That's really kind but you will send yourself batty when you start looking at them closely! Its for the boot lid, matching the one I have on the grill. I lost the rear one when the car got rear ended last year. Actually to be fair it survived the accident but didn't survive the paint shops buffing machine!

I bought another 115mm Ford oval badge to compare this week. Supposedly is for older 80's 90s Falcons. Its different again!

It has a two pin rear mounting as well as an adhesive pad which to use on an Escort you have to break off the tabs.

Here it is pictured top. The one below is the 80s replacement to the original 70s badges. This is a better made badge to the originals which were cheap plastic and prone to discolouring especially in our sun. These later 80s ones are part metal as they stick in areas to magnets. They have a very square shoulder compared to any other badges I have seen which really suits the square nature of Mk2 Escorts. This newer one that came today is also part metal but with more rounded shoulders so it does probably come closer to the 70s originals. Because of the more rounder shoulder the main centre Ford logo is slightly smaller than that of the 80's squared shouldered one giving the initial impression that the badge looks smaller even though over all both badges are the same dimensions. It also has a deep blue as well. I ordered a second one of these just in case but if I can acquire more of the squared shouldered 80s ones that would be the best choice for me.

Squared shoulder 80’s it is! Are you trying to buy ALL the badges & have the monopoly on them! 🤔😂

LOL No I was just trying to get a matching pair in that I have a square shouldered one on my grill that's perfect and didn't want to rip it off just to replace it with another type.

The little collection above was just what I acquired over the past 35 years. The original plastic type that is still in the blister pack was bought from Ford in the 80s only to be told that was the last one and they were replaced by the square shouldered type. Although not original they were much better quality being part metal but now that one has been damaged I need another to match my grill one. The others I just purchased over the years to check out the alternatives and cheap replicas. These new old stock ones I just bought were the first I have bought in over a decade and they are pretty good and will use them as a last resort but that will mean destroying a perfectly good square shouldered one on the grill. It was only that I recently started looking at them again I found at least another 6 variations to the ones I already had and that's just in 115mm size. There are many more sizes and dozens more types and shades on top of that. Some of them a huge and cost hundreds of dollars.

Sell them off on Fleabay as original replica copy RS toolbox badges, as used by the Peckham Factory Racing Team.

This time next year, Rodders.  You'll be a millionaire. :-)

But I want a matching boot badge! Mk1s are so much easier they don't change in size shape and colour!

If your committed to originality and want the original plastic Ford ones that arent as good a quality as the later ones then you need to commit to over 200 quid.

I have one of these pictured in the blister pack but at over 200 quid it can remain single I think!

The Oval Evolution ....... (So far)

OvalEvolution.thumb.jpg.14156bf22ce0834dcdac628a06e9cdd1.jpg

Additions to my thread on the evolution of the 114mm Ford badge and which best to choose I have acquired new ones to expand the differences further.

1. This is the original off my Mk2 Escort from 1979. Being an all plastic design and made in an age before the concept of UV resistance it had slightly yellowed darkening the blue of the Ford Logo and not quite as shiny on the silver boarder and wording although at best only silver as real chrome paint has yet to be introduced.

2. This is a Ford replacement purchased in the 80's that is near identical to the original with a thin form factor with the only difference being a 2 piece design but unless compared side by side you would not realise its slight different construction. This would be the go too replacement for your Mk2 restoration EXCEPT they are virtually unobtainable. I once saw another like this one for sale that would have given me a matched set but the price was 275 pounds a number of years ago. So unfortunately it will just remain single and alone in its packet for a reference.

3. The third one in our list is sourced from a Turkish supplier and are exact replicas of the 80s British Fords appearing on Mk3 Escorts and Sierras. Its thin plastic form identical to original 70's badges however its very distinctly lighter blue. So while good as a replacement badge, the lighter colour is so distinctive it would put alot of people off seeking an more authentic look.

4.  Although I can't imagine they were manufactured locally and most likely sourced from Europe these badges were the Australian replacement for the plastic original badges. Ford Australia not wanting to use the lighter blue UK version so they used these that were the same basic blue colour of the originals but with a different form and construction. Rather than all plastic they are cast metal with acrylic centre which allows the rim and wording to be properly chromed with a mirror finish rather than the basic silver of the 70's. They are unique also in the form in that they are very square shouldered. This forces the Ford wording to be slightly larger than would normally be the case in the thinner original all plastic badges. I would be interested to hear from anyone if they have seen this badge in Europe or the USA as to date I have only found evidence of it here in Australia.

5. This 90s badge can be found originally on more luxury equipped for Fairlanes and Fairmonts. I suspect a US origin with this particular badge. A notable step up in quality with a chromed metal construction with a acrylic overlay on the blue portions of the logo. Highly polished but now with the darker blue which we now attribute to current Ford badges. (So this is a third difference in the blue shading, notably darker than the original and much darker than the 80's Sierra type.) In the photo it has the illusion of being more domed than they actually are due to their high polish but they are thin in form like the originals but metal surrounds without the thicker square shoulders of type 4. They are adhesive backed still but also have press in tabs that can affix them more securely to boot lids but require drilling to make use of them. The tabs can be removed if you just want to affix them via the adhesive backing to a grill or such.

6. This is the later domed badge seen on Ka's and others of that era before they increased the size of their badges. Not one you would consider putting on your Old Skool Ford as they would look a bit silly.

Conclusions

Which to choose? Given that originals are unobtainable at anything one could consider reasonable if at all, as it is you see hundreds off pounds in badges above just cause I got curious so even the less expensive ones are still over the top on cost. Type 4 is a great badge which I have on the car at the moment but like the originals I haven't seen one for sale new in decades so I would have to exclude that one just based on availability. That leaves the Turkish sourced light blue ones that in form are identical to the originals but the lightness of the blue is just too obviously wrong when you mate them with Escorts Cortinas and Capris that we own here. So as it stands the best choice for replacement badges I could find was badge number 5. Unlike the light blue Sierra ones the darker blue isn't that obvious a change from an original unless you see them side by side like I have pictured. The metal construction gives are much more classier look. Given the paint and finish of restorations these days above factory original these step up to match that quality standard. With a deep 3D look to match the deep glosses of modern paints. Interestingly to buy them costs the same as the all plastic ones from Turkey although postage costs may tip the scale there depending where you are but basically for an original metal Ford badge being similarly priced to a plastic replica that is lighter blue I think they represent the best value although as with all these badges they can be expensive to some but they would come in at approx. 30 quid each plus postage. If I were to have to replace one of my badges I would replace both of them with this type

That said I will still keep an eye our for an exact replica to the originals as im sure there will be an anorak out there that will point out that its not original even though its better.

PS. On the quest for the perfect replica there are some dubious Chinese ones out there so be sure you look really close before you commit to buying. Here is badge number 7 of Chinese origin and at first glace you know something is wrong with it but you cant quite put your figure to it until you realise that the Ford wording seem to be sinking to the bottom in the sea of blue. You get this urge to try tipping it upside down trying to get it to float to the centre but it doesn't work!
