JJ DIKKE Posted December 7, 2021 Report Posted December 7, 2021 Good Morning Everyone My input would be as follows: This appears to be a similar tank arrangement as in my car. My opinion is that exactly as Katana stated you maybe venting the top of your tank straight into the boot. If you have the tube connected from the top vent of the tank to the small pipe adjacent to the filler neck then this is clearly what is happening. The vent at the top of the tank should in my opinion be vented out through the rear of the boot, at the rear and very back of the boot as I think the standard system is. As dt36 states providing you fill the tank carefully this small pipe adjacent to the filler tray should not be necessary and indeed I have blocked mine. When petrol is poured into the tank the air displaced from the tank will then vent out at the bottom, very rear of the boot as previously described. I can confirm that I have no smell of fuel in my car and or small garage other than what would be expected from these old cars. Hope this contribution along with all the others will assist. 1

I was going to suggest the same thing. You can buy brank new petrol tanks now, so unless you want/need the bigger tank set up it could be an option. I've just got a standard tank and don't often feel the need to full that right up. https://www.motorsport-tools.com/new-escort-mk2-right-hand-standard-replacement-fuel-petrol-tank.html?SID=qg00mjfpsfq07b30ktroshpaf2

I bet if I dig around, I might find my fuel sender wires to. I've run out of likes for the day, so thanks for that and have a thumb instead. It's clean and hasn't been anywhere 👍 😁 1

Mine is not connected, as I only fill from the pump. I changed my filler neck to a proper fuel rated hose a few years ago. Got it from Rally Design. There is a vent on the top of the tank that you can see in the pics below that I have run a copper pipe from and out through a grommet. This comes out behind my rear bumper. I think at some point in the future, I'd like to fit an original side mounted tank back in my car. Nice one thanks for your pictures! I have been thinking though, what stops the fuel coming back up and spilling out with hard driving? cheers!
CryptoWesty Posted December 9, 2021 Author Report Posted December 9, 2021 I think I found something great for what I just asked about… 1

Now I'm going to state the obvious if that is the case - the tray isn't sealed from the boot and venting the tank into it is effectively venting the tank into the boot ! ! ! Hence the strong fumes! I'd suggest a bit of re-routing and re-plumbing for both hoses to outside the car! The blue silicone joiner is unlikely to be the 'major' source of fumes - I have the same, but literally a 3" length joiner from neck to neck. There is a mild fuel smell in my boot whilst standing and all my vents discharge through the OS tank well. Fuel contact with the blue silicone degrades it over time causing leaks hence when the 'new' fluorocarbon silicone was developed. Thankyou so much for this mate you totally nailed it I’m now going to run the pipe that goes to the filler overspill directly out the car instead and leave the filler OS as I wont ever spill fuel there thanks again for putting me straight Edited December 9, 2021 by CryptoWesty

A workable and MUCH cheaper solution is use clear PVC hose for tank vent but add a couple of loops into the line and hold them in a vertical orientation like _()_()_()_ This isn't my original idea, bike racers have done it for years from tank top, coils with opposite end straight down the steering stem . . . . . so it drains over the front tyre ! ! ! What could go wrong with that LOL! 1

Panics me it being in storage away from me and a spark could set the whole place up with that open ended pipe jjst going inside the car, so glad to have came across this forum Edited December 9, 2021 by CryptoWesty 1
