Its an interesting analysis to understand why people were hanging onto their cars longer than ever before but it did make me laugh at the car they used to highlight that one in five cars has over 100 thousand miles on the clock. Its sort of inevitable after 40 years!

Your Australian cars , have high mileage's, I guess from the large expanses of land 😳

When I was looking at buying and importing a UTE, the majority of them had high KMS.

The one I finally decided on had 187,000 KMS

Yes most cars clock up big K's before being sold on the secondhand market. My Focus has 173k when I bought it.

But that article was from the UK so thats a Euro RS2000 in the images they used!

Yes, not quite sure why they showed an Escort as an example. By the read of the article , they were suggesting people were hanging onto their cars longer, which is true.

Because the new cars are not coming though, due to the repercussion's of the chip shortage, second hand car and van prices have gone up thousands in the last 2 years.

Well I guess since I have hung on to mine for almost 40 years it seemed like they were taking a shot at me personally! LOL But it was a funny sample choice, a 2010 Focus may have been a better example. This whole chip shortage thing is bizarre that we now cant build cars without them or simple enough that they require rare earth elements chips that are controlled by the Chinese and Taiwan.  You mentioned how you bought your ute and as you know its sort of the stable transport of tradies here. Because they too have become so computerized that even on the secondhand market they are fetching huge prices. My sister searched for 18 months and only just recently bought one sight unseen off the net from another state and had to have it trucked in! I know millennials cant function without their gizmos but surely a less computer reliant mechanical version of these vehicles can be produced to fill the shortages for a portion that dont really want or need it. All that stuff is contain in phones these days you dont need it all onboard. Wait till the realization kicks in with on boad speed monitoring and police initiated remote dead switches. Watch the people hang onto their cars indefinitely!

Some manufacturers stopped making vehicles, and some continued and have fields of them waiting for the chips.

If the UTE prices rise anymore , I think I'll send it back 😁

I have an electric vivaro for my day job. 

When it had its first service a few weeks ago (🤷🏻‍♂️) I also said the one 12v charger doesn't work, only reason I was worried because was in a fitting with the airbag control, 2 weeks they had it. Sent emails to vauxhall as they couldn't work out why it wasn't working, eventually I said I need it back for work, he said there's an ECU that controls all interior lights and aux functions ( heater switches etc) they think it's that.....

A computer ...  To control a fag lighter .... Why!!! 🤷🏻‍♂️😂😂

Weeks now to source computer glitches? LOL Even the electrics in a 2007 Mk2 Focus drive me nuts, I couldn't imagine the electronics for one of those things. Its not that I cant work technology far from it I just find it so unnecessary and overly complicated to get the same job done as a simple lever. But most of is its warnings on just about everything as if I need a reminder to breath in and out! Have people dumbed down that much in the past decade and I havent noticed? Oh wait ..... I did notice that actually!

It maybe partially the 'dumbing down' aspect but its more that the manufacturers are coming up with these 'labour saving / ease of use' devices or controls as an enhancement and consumers are thinking that's clever / useful and are happy to accept them without a second thought. I'm fairly sure no buyer has ever contacted a manufacturer to request a labour saving device - its a bit like the supermarkets that only sell 'correct' veggies and fruit and because they are specially selected a) the cost more and b) thousands of tons are sent to waste as they don't fit the required specification ! ! ! Only now consumers are asking to stop the waste so the shops are selling 'wonky' products at slightly less cost ! I'm of an age when fruit and veg just came as is AND was seasonal - having strawberries all year round is plainly wrong. Something else that the shops have 'given' us as an enhancement and the younger generation just accept it and don't question it ! Rant over!

Weeks and vauxhall technical hq having to tell the dealership what to look for .. 😳

 

Completely agree, no need for a computer to control a fag lighter an a switch to put the air bag on or off🤷🏻‍♂️

Think about it a bit more lads. Cars that have chips and stuff stop you working on them, as you all know. Once you dumb down they've got you, there will be NOTHING you can do to your car yourself. PC controlling the lighter is due to that canbus system where everything works off common supply. Hence why you need code readers, cos even the onboard computer doesn't really know what's packed up. Its just a logic system that detects a fault (voltage drop) somewhere. ie 'ignition system' but that could be ab-so-lutely anything.

Cars are now being made with cameras to recognise speed signs and prevent you speeding, and with sat-nav they will grass you to the fuzz. Not all bad cos none of us want chavs speeding past schools etc, but talk about hammers to crack a nut ffs!! And whilst you say 'keep your car longer' it won't really work will it? All they'll do is stop making petrol, either cos they hate our cars because we're only a small group and don't hug trees every night before bed, or because with a minority group it won't be viable to produce it anymore.
