Pug Posted February 18, 2023 Report Posted February 18, 2023 I've recently purchased my Mk2 Escort which was extensively refurbished by the previous owner (see my post on the Newbie forum). The work included installing a 1600 xflow engine which I understand has been rebored to 1700cc. The V5C is still showing the car as a 1.3L. What do people inform the DVLA in cases like this?
Admin Vista Posted February 18, 2023 Admin Report Posted February 18, 2023 You can send the V5C in to updard the cc and change the engine number but there's a strong probability that they'll write back wanting either to inspect it, or requesting a letter of installation from a VAT registered garage.

Guess most people don't bother then?
Johnny Boy Posted February 18, 2023 Report Posted February 18, 2023 I had a similar scenario with DVLA a few years ago, when I changed a 1600 diesel engine to a 1900 TDI diesel in my VW T25 Camper. I did the conversion myself, but even though I am a qualified mechanic, I had to get it inspected by a local garage, and get them to give me a headed letter of conformation, of what engine , and capacity it was. I sent it off, and got the amended V5 back. Just DVLA hoops to jump through .

Trying to weigh up whether it's going to be worth the hassle and what the downside of not doing anything.
Knappers Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 I think the downside would be issues with an insurance company if there was to be an accident or anything like that.

Why? If you are knowingly driving a modified vehicle and you stupidly haven't informed your insurance co. and there is an incident - then you deserve all the crap that follows! You should give the insurance vultures absolutely no wriggle room as regards modifications!
Knappers Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 This is true but what about the poor sod that you crash into and have no insurance ?

Just to be clear I've informed my insurance company of all the modifications so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm just not clear what problems could arise if the DVLA are holding incorrect data.
katana Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 If the incorrect data could 'decieve' in an attempt to, say, pay less road tax or avoid elements of the MOT, I can see issues arising but otherwise ?

Good points but as the car is registered as an historic vehicle neither of these would apply. I'm beginning to think it may be better to let sleeping dogs lie!

It does as certain modifications and when they were done affects the vehicle validity for avoiding an MOT test - its not automatic like the 40 yr Historic tax class change.

BIG G Posted March 7, 2023 Report Posted March 7, 2023 Your car could have bubble arches from the factory and this wouldn't be on the V5 so why does its make a differance now and I'm pretty sure a large transmission tunnel was also available from the Rallye Sport catalogue at time of manufacture as well. All these mods could of been placed on the car at time of manufacture and wouldn't feature on the log book. Engine swaps is a different matter.
