Nige65 Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 As the title says, does it work or just add weight to the car, although I like the sound of the aftermarket air filter, I would also like as quieter cabin. If so, are there any recommended types of sound deadening that folks on here are happy with, I've scanned the web and Dodo mat seems to be a good shout but open to opinions.
Miniliteman Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 Friend of mine used adhesive sound deadening material inside the car from Armaflex. Maybe they have stuff for under the bonnet as well.
Ray Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 on a mk1 1300E, ford used sound deadening under the bonnet, until they had several episodes of it falling off onto the exhaust manifold and catching fire, it took a year before they deleted it if you put too much or too thick a sound deadening on the floor in the main cabin, an original carpet wont fit properly as an aside, didnt the mk2 RS2, have a factory deadening mat on and shaped to the upper bulkhead, that should fit a std mk2 as well, i would have thought

The 'reproduction ones' are GRP, have no acoustic properties and are for show only. I honestly can't remember my 78 RS2 having one when I was 2nd owner in 82/83! 1
DT36 Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 I have Dodo Mat under the rear carpet, rear firewall (welded in) behind rear seat, under rear shelf and a square under my bonnet. It seems to fit under the carpet fine, even with the original factory fibre soundproofing on top of it. The above has definitely made my car quiter and removed a lot of vibration from my bonnet caused by the WCXM. I will get around to fitting it under my front carpet at some point too, it's that good. Just not got any left at the moment. I was also going to fit a square inside my front door skins, but when I took the inner trims off, the panels were smothered in the original spray wax, so left it. I have also done the rear of 2 vans with this stuff and it makes a massive difference. Additionally used it on a Mk3 Mondeo, where you have to cut the factory rubber soundproofing in the drivers footwell to access one of the front subframe captive nuts when they spin/break their tack welds. Something else I also did around my rear inner wheel arch panels that go between the rear seat side panels and open into the boot area was to fill these with pvc loft lagging. You can buy a big roll of this in B&Q. This stuff is brilliant for lining van panels (on top of Dodo Mat) as it doesn't absorb any moisture. This area was also covered in spray wax on my car, so couldn't fit Dodo there. However, I think this has also helped reduce the panel drone. It works well there instead of Dodo because there's no window winder to interfere with. See pics below for example of Dodo and PVC lagging.
Nige65 Posted July 18, 2023 Author Report Posted July 18, 2023 Thanks for the in depth reply, I have ordered a pack of 20 self adhesive backed dodo mat, probably more than I need but once I have the interior stripped out over the winter, I can have a play around with it 👍 1
