Some years ago I restored a Mk2 Escort.

I also heavily modified a Mk1 Escort while using it.

I then built a very rapid Mk1 Estate. (pictured 4 years ago after running out of fuel)

These were built in my garage, at home.

While this was happening I was helping with, or at least aware of, many more.

Not all Escorts but Capri's, Anglia's and Transits especially.

Currently the Estate is partially disassembled to repair several annoyances and I know of 1 other project in a home(ish) garage.

I've always done my own in the home garage, first my parents garage, not sure they were that happy about that :) then in a single garage of my first house and now in a reasonably sized double.

I've worked on and modified all sorts, mini's, Fords, VWs

Unfortunately, my son is more academic and has no idea when it comes to working on cars so I cant pass it on :(

Mate don’t give up hope. I  had not a clue either, I just bumble along trying to learn as I go. I’m a complete novice not a clue…On the maiden voyage I expect to fall apart before I get off the driveway 😂😂

Could be an age thing.

We messed around with these cars in our youth and still do today as they were basic and simple to work on.

My lad turns 17 next year and doesn't want a retro or classic car, so it will be a boring modern hatchback, which I will not be modifying or doing engine swaps on 🤣 nor will people have any desire to restore in 40 years.

Agreed, the younger generation want things done and now, with instant gratification.  Unlike my gen, who believed in working hard to meet your Goal

That being said, i have 3 young boys, who no matter how hard I have  tried,  share very little enthusiasm about building up the Mk2 escort or keeping the Saffy running.

My eldest it seems is more interested in his Moms modern Yaris , all the bells and whistles, no fiddly window winders and manual door locks.

We just could be last of a dying breed.

What's wrong with these kids today, I bet if I fitted a 14" touch screen in the Mex, they would put up with a bumpy ride, ringing ears, stinking of petrol and no luxury's ......... or not 😄
