could be the manifold leaking?, noise can travel and mislead you try carefully spraying wd40 around manifold an carb whilst idling, when sound goes or changes you've found the leak area Pete....

My Brother in law over in Bosham nr chichester can help i expect, He preps race cars for a living so you no the tracking will be set proper Pete.....

if you use brush on primer yr likely to have more finishing work to do with the wet n dry as the brush lines make it more uneven, just more elbow grease really Pete
