I had no interest in further education, couldn't wait to leave school and get a wage, and I did. I haven't starved. I have worked all my life from school and have never had a penny in benefits (we don't have kids). I get this from my Dad, who, being disabled, was very much at the end of the que for jobs. In the 60s and 70s there was no obligation to employ the disabled, so firms just didn't. For that reason, I don't think there was a time he wasn't on some benefit or other, if he didn't claim, we wouldn't eat!
As for college fees, I do think the less well off should have a chance at further education if they want it, but the degree should be a useful one. If you want a free course, it has to be for something that we as a country are short of, not yet another 'Media expert'. Choose a free or subsidised (grant not loan) course or pay for it.
Too many graduates are serving burgers and stacking shelves, and too many students are on a gravy train!
