Hey guys

I'm having a butchers at wilwood brake kits for me capper, I don't want anything special, just something that'll keep me happy for a few years. I'm fitting a boggo 2litre inj with maybe a few mods in the future. Is the powerlite 4pot 247mm vented etc etc going to be good?

Also where is the best (cheapest ) place to get them?

Cheers

To be honest on a Capri, I'd just go with standard 2.8i stuff, just with really decent pads like the Ferrodo DS2500's

Got them in my Anglia and it hauls up just fine, ok the Anglia is a lighter car than a Capri.

But standard 2.8i stuff works ok...

I think what I am trying to say is you could spend a load of money and not really get a lot of gain.

Nip down to the Volvo breaker just by the St Neots turn and get yourself a set of 4 pots of a 240.

You have to elongate the mounting holes ever so slightly... but its cheap and in the spirit of this forum

Cheers guys.

That volvo garage is in my village and about 5 minutes walk from my place, so I shall be paying him a visit  I've got 2.8i stuff on there at the minute but I think one of the disks is warped and the caliper looks abit past it. Do you gain much from drilled and grooved 2.8i disks or is it mainly for show? I thought I might as well get new disks to make sure

Cheers again

P.S. Neil I remember seeing your blue van (a few years back) a couple of times at the Black Cat roundabout and going 'oooooo' with my face pressed agianst the window. I miss being a kid :(

Ive got a set of the volvo 240 calipers as I heard the same thing about elongating the holes and they will fit. I've offered them up but IMO your taking too much metal out and it leaves the edges very thin, I might have chanced it if it were something else but as it's the brakes, I'm not risking it, but its your choice.

cosworth 2wd 283mm discs...

Mk1 monde single pistonsliders.

2 brackets and habs machined, big brakes for under 200 quid.

or...

RS turbo front discs.

mk3 granada callipers.

2 brackets and hubs machined and will go under a 13 inch wheel.

again, under 200 quid.

both kits above are the 280 and 260 kits from capri sport at a fraction on the price

I've got a DIY 280 setup....except mine are mounted safely on the machined face of the struts not bodged... ....because as Jon has said its your brakes...I like to know they are safe...

I've got standard brakes on my 2.8 and they're fine at the moment but i'm defo gonna get a caprisport setup before i start upping the horses. I've done quite a lot of research on the matter and the caprisport kit looks by far the best to me. One big bonus is that the mondeo pads are not going to cost a bomb. look at the prices for some of the aftermarket calipers!

Your prices are out of date mate, Ive just ordered my 260 kit and it was £265 (that also included my membership fee of £14.00)

my prices are not out of date chap, thats the prce for buying discs off the shelf and calipers from the breakers and doing it yourself!

the only things you need to fabricate are the brackets, or capri sport wil sell you them for 40 quid, but they dont like to.

my 283 kit has come in at just under 170 quid so far as i got the brackets made by a mate, hoses by pirtek, calipers were 30 quid from teh breakers, and discs were cossie ebc items which did cost a bit, machining will cost me a 24 case of stella, just need to get 8 longer wheel studs from RD next.

i know 2 people who waited over 6 weeks for a strut braces and the whole time capri sport were putting other strut braces on ebay, how does that work?

ive heard mixed views about em, but have personally never dealt with em.

Yeah, Ive heard similar but Ive also heard lots of good things as well, its only his hobby at the end of the day. I spoke to him on the phone and he said 4 weeks from receipt of the hubs so we'll have to see.

Guys... before you go splashing huge wads of cash round, try some decent pads...

I was amazed at how good the Ferrodo DS2500's were..... but then at £70 a set they blimmin should be.

But you would be amazed at the difference a pad can make, even things like EBC Greenstuff can make a difference over things like PowerTrain and other 'cheaper' makes you get from Motor factors these days.

I've just got a standard set of 2.8i vents, the extra cross drilling etc only makes a difference if you are on track really, it just helps get the heat away quicker, but unless you are doing a mad run across Milton Keynes most brake set ups have time to cool before you next apply them anyway, so normal vents will be fine.

i got told that guy with the volvo scrapyard dont like selling stuff

I think the son is fine to deal with, its just the old man can be a bit of a funny bugger... but them most of the old codgers that run breakers can be funny....

It seems strange how some people think that the 2.8 set up is good, I re-built mine completely last year, rebuilt the calipers, new cylinders and shoes, new pads and braided hoses and a new master cylinder and for what I want and have there just not good enough, and I cant have built them wrong because they passed the MOT with flying colours which is why Ive gone for the 260 kit.

xpack how about making up a guide listing all the parts? will these fit under mk2 escort rs alloys?

not a prob alladin il write up all the parts and mods req,d when im sober.

The 283 cossie 2wd disc conversion is for 15 inch alloys, they fit under brookies and minilites etc.

the 260 conversion is however designed for 13 inch wheels, i know they dont fit under lasers though as callipers hit the spokes so RS 4 spokes will have same probs, 10mm spacers do get round the problem but on capris most fit 7jx13s or bigger.

Yeah the son's alright, my brothers done some work on a few cars for him in the past so they owe each other a few favours. The old man is brown bread, last year I think.

I spoke to Neil @ Caprisport tonight as I have said Ive ordered this set up and I have RS 7.5" 4 spokes so I wanted peace of mind they would fit. As you have said they will not fit the laser alloys which is correct, but this is because they are a 6" wheel (apparently, I did'nt know that) they will fit under RS 7" & 7.5" though.

ive got 2.8 brakes on my 1600 mk2....Not a fan tbh

They are a bit scary sometimes especially when some old bugger pulls out on you doing 50 in a 70 on the motorway.

Pads and calipers are fine, new brake fluid and passed the mot last month.

Deffo getting a better kit.

well as the title is 'best brakes' I have to say the AP stuff from r.a.c.e. is best

caprisport setup is ok but the caprisport man is a cock with an attitude problem

Are those of you using caprisport type setups still using servoes as i have all the parts required to make up a 260 kit but no servo (or space) for my cortina (standard bore master I think .75) are we talking high pedal effort here.
