I'm in my first yr at college doing a national diploma in media studies(2 yr course).

I really want to get into journalism (motorsport).

I'm debating on going to uni or not.

The course i want to do is at brighton uni, but there's only 60 places each yr!!!!!

Only go to Uni if you are 100% dedicated, don't go for 'uni life' cos your work will suffer!! It's very easy to get distracted!

Get a trade apprentiship My wife did Uni and is a certified smarty pants with 5 degrees yet i out earn her without a single qualification to my name .

 

I worked in a Universty and even the lecturers say that 70% of all people atttnding will be next years counter workers in Mcdonalds .

I think the whole degree education system has lost credibility and suffered massively under each successive governments determination to get every young person into further education. (good for the unemployment figures right Tony?)

 

Some people simply aren't cut out for it and would do much better doing an old skool apprenticeship and learning a proper skill or craft trade. My partner is a solicitor and spent nearly 7 years learning her trade and getting qualified, I'm a marine engineer that did a hands on apprenticeship and I now out earn her by almost 100%.

 

I also have to say that degrees have been drastically watered down to increase take up and raise more revenue for the universities that teach them. Don't get me wrong, we need universities and we need the research that many of their more serious departments do. What I think we don't need are some of the ridiculous courses that are being taught now

 

Surfing for instance, you're shitting me right? 4 years learning how to grow a goatee, wax a board and ride a wave?

 

Another one that I can't name involved my cousin spending 4 years at "uni" where as best as I can tell all she did was watch soap operas and write dull essays on them. She got a 2.1 and now works in a gas board call centre.

 

I guess what I'm saying is choose wisely and do a course that's worth it, be it at uni or otherwise and you'll never regret it and never look back.

My current and my ex g/f's both did degrees, one in media & one in fashion. My ex is now a producer for TV shows, and my current G/f is moving up quickly at Ted Baker, They're training her up it o be management!! With the right drive you can succeed from uni, but you can't expect the degree to do it for you, that certificate is a very small part in succeeding!

personally id say go, when applying for (some) jobs those little letters after your name mean a lot

 

but dont say i didnt warn you that affording to keep running an OSF is hard as f*ck whilst at uni

i passed a test to join a plumming programme yesterday which seems far more prosperous. so i accepted the place
