Cookie Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Ever drove a car, reading another post got me wondering how old most people where when they first ever drove a car on there own, not sat on a lap turning the wheel steering pedals and all I was very young, but i did have the advantage of being massivly tall all my life, was getting served beer at 13 without a second look I'm not sure of the age, but it was second year of junior school (8 maybe is it ????) on boxing day, my old man took me to the local comprehensive school that has got huge grounds, and taught me to drive in my mums old blue vauxhall chevete It is a very vivid and good memory i have, and have had the car bug ever since
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Well the first vehicle I drove properly wasn't a car. It was a JCB! We'd moved to a new Barrett estate when I was 12. I think I was 13 when two of the builders (they were Irish and we called them Paddy and Spike even though we never knew their real names) were working on a Sunday and no one else was. Paddy let me have a go at driving the JCB. Ok, it was only for about 25 metres but I still drove it. The second car was my dads Cavalier round a car park when I was 16.
over_head_cam Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 My mate (bestest) GAVE me a Mk Cortina when I was about 17. I promptly jumped in a drove it home - Very fookin badly I reckon I was a bit of a late starter
Stu_B Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 I didn't drive a car till I was 17 but I grew up with fieldbikes, go-karts & tractors
orionmojo Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 first time i properly drove it was a mk2 festa when i was 16. my dad 'got it for a pint' sort of thing cos it was rotten and taught me to drive in it round the truckstop cos i helped him change the kingpins on his tipper. good memories
Gareth Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Think I was about... Err.... 17.... I think. Was in a m8's brand new 106 He killed it 18 months later
X-pack-Glyn Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 I lifted my mums fiesta mk1 (950 POWER) when she stopped outside woolworths in high wycombe, i think i was about 12-13, usuall thing i thought i knew it all, but i got it right round the block before she came out and the clutch stank. after that i tought myself to drive in a rotted out mk1 1100 4 door, i kept it in a block of garages outside my nans bungalow and would just potter about in the compound, eventually mastered the doughnut (as best as you can with an 1100 on crossplys), handbrake turn, and how to drive into a wall and look very silly .
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Jimbob was 13, and it was in his first car... A Fiat 126! Although I don't generally make that well known!!!
Osgood Isgood Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 I was 18! Very late starter.....made up for it since though as I wouldn't mind a quid for every mile I have ever driven! I have made the mistake of teaching my Daughter (now 15) to drive at the age of 12! She thinks she can drive the car to the shops now!
Mr.Sumo Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 13....ON THE RACETRACK I HASTEN TO ADD Properly and legally , 2 weeks after i turned 17...4 lessons then my test , passed first time Then my Dad let me have a go in his mk1 Sierra company car , drove it round the block twice ... he"s never let me drive another car of his since ...can"t see why myself
Pye Man Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 I was 11 or 12. Driving my dads Transit round on the beach.
bmxdave Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Mines gotta be on the beach. I was about 9 or 10. Could barely reach the pedals. In a mk3 Astra 1600. After i had the hang of the clutch i was promptly taken out of the seat by my mum for driving 'irraticaly'.

Wessie Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 the day before i was racing while i was driving it round the field the bloke teaching me was taking the car apart still worked almost all night then i raced th enext day, did a 360 spin on the 2nd corner, then ripped the sidewall out the tyre on the last lap and still limped it home for a trophy (3rd overall )
