Mrs O/H/C Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 IT SEEMS QUITE NORMAL FOR KIDS AGED BETWEEN 11-12 TO HAVE A KEY......BUT DONT FEEL PRESSURED TO GIVE IN IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY TO ISSUE A KEY QUITE YET. WE GAVE OUR DAUGHTER A KEY AT ABOUT 11-12 BUT HAD TO CHANGE THE LOCKS 3 TIMES THROUGH MISPLACING THE KEY............TRY GOING OUT MORE OFTEN AND LEAVING THEM IN THE HOUSE AND IF YOUR HAPPY WITH HOW THEY BEHAVE AND DONT BURN THE HOUSE DOWN THEN GIVE THEM MORE LEEWAY. HOPE THIS HELPS

mk1super Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 I was a latch key kid at 11 ish though not through my mums choice she had to work ( Dad died ya see ) and i personelly feel it did me no harm what so ever if anything its made me independant and responsible (Well sorta ). Just my 2p's worth like.

bmxdave Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 I was about 12. When i started getting the bus home from school. I was fairly responsoble if not a bit forgetfull. I felt good havnt the responsability though, and made an effort to act more grown up about it, which when i look back now, was a good thing.
MK5 Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 i was 18. my mum got fed up having to wait for me to get in from the pub!! my son Sam was 11. He was going to a child minder but he found it too "childish" as she looked after much younger children. i trialled him walking home from school a couple of times (i was at home waiting for him) and asked him if he was OK. he wanted to go home to get changed, do his homework and play on his computer, all of which he couldn't do til i picked him up from the childminder. it worked for us.

Jordan comes home with her son from school, picks up the key (so he doesn't lose it at school ) walks down the lane and lets himself in - we then give her the key the next morning when I pick her son up and take them both to school. I've told him don't touch the gas cooker, don't have a bath or shower, don't use any sharp knives, don't answer the door, don't go out, don't let your mates in, etc, etc and we're giving it a go Oh, and he has to let me know when he's home
