Arched Escy Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Seen a rat Konsul today....matt black, red steels chrome hubcaps.
Jarrodm Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 This post has really seriously fooked me off ! A rat rodded vw is refered to as "Hoodride" www.hoodride.com A Rat rod isn't a style or brand, it's a lifestyle. and most "ratrods" are shit becouse there ment to look like rat rods, not the real thing ! Anything can be a rat rod with time and preservation. The reason most rat rods are matt black is becouse it's is the cheapest easiest cover for red oxide ! Rust is not a crime !!!! Rant over. Jarrod EDIT ! and it's not true about spray on rust, a talented air brusher can make anything look older, one of the tricks to making a shit rat rod is covering the body in pepsi (not coke !) and leaving it a few hours. Duck oil and time make a tu rat rod !
Wessie Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 This post has really seriously fooked me off ! get over it ! A Rat rod isn't a style or brand, it's a lifestyle.
Rick Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 this ones a bit much for my liking but this: quality
Jarrodm Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 HA wessie ! Yeah, the womack ghia is the desktop on all the work pc's ! Jarrod Type "project" on ebay.com and then click cars and trucks.....Anything pre 1960 is my dream motor !!!
escortmad79 Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 that last ones wicked! Owned (along with loads of other rods & kustoms) by Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top The 37 Ford coupe & Pop you posted pics of aren't Rat Rods Rat Look can suit Old Skool Fords too, here's Rebel MC from this sites Cortina:
ADY Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 i'm mixed on this one, some rat look motors are cool, some just look crap. But i would definatly have one!
Rick Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 to be honest anyone can rub throught the paint and let it fester a bit though, or not wipe the bird shits off the paint to get that faded effect.
Jarrodm Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 That Tinas the nuts As for "They look shit and unloved." I have no comment to that, But what i will say is my 100e is loved, it is the single most important item in my life. I would do anything to protect that car, and will do what ever it takes to keep it on the road. Where it belongs. My car may look "shit and unloved" but it is that way becouse It is driven every day, it lives outside with nothing but duck oil to keep it safe. It is a used car and will remain a used car, not hidden away in a garage and polished. Fair enough i T cut it and wash it etc when it looks real shitty, but at the end of the day it's my car and i don't give a fook if someone thinks it looks shit or unloved. Jarrod
FlashCadillac Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 faided paint doesnt make a rat rod its the thing about going back to basics... so fuel injection, no power steeing, no fancy susspension setups just cramming an oversized engine into a small car and driving the nads off it, who cares what it looks like in the process, its about having fun
Jelly Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 A Rat rod isn't a style or brand, it's a lifestyle. That post made me cringe.
Wessie Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 thats my opinion on it why spend so much time working on a car to end up making it look like some of the above its just not my cup of tea i dont mind a sleeper styled vehicle ,bit of surface rust etc (terry davies mk3 etc) but the VW's above are shocking
Jarrodm Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 A Rat rod isn't a style or brand, it's a lifestyle. That post made me cringe. Why ? Jarrod
FlashCadillac Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 A Rat rod isn't a style or brand, it's a lifestyle. That post made me cringe. Why ? Jarrod passive embarrassment
Jarrodm Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 It's true, it takes time and dedication to build a true rat rod. You can't just wake up and say "Today i'm going to make a rat rod." You need to live life a certain way otherwise you will lose interst and will rush. A rushed rat rod is a shit hot rod. Wich is why people have such ow opinions of rat rods. Time = Patina ! Patina = a good Rat Rod ! Surely everyone knows an old boy who's had his motor from new, but something makes his car a little bit cooler ? Why should i feel embarissed about the facts of building a rat rod. I've already started, and when i'm 30 i'm going to have a car like no one elses. I feel imensly proud of my car, but it makes me feel real good when i'm having a shit day to know that my car's never going to be finshed, It's just going to get better ! Jarrod
Doc Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Next car i get it staying with all the original patina as long as its structurally sound and no holes i wont paint it . Money on go faster stuff
james p Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 i likerat look i like the idea of havein a 10k car that can look like shit
pimtina Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 IMO - flat black paint and red wheels do not a ratrod make. But this debate will rage on for quite some time. That Mk2 Cortina is no more a rat than the shiny blue '36 Ford coupe or for that matter all those rusty VWs. The look has been taken over by any one and everyone who thinks their motor is a rat. My Mk1 Cortina has most of it's original 41 year old paint on, but it's dead flat, if I put red wheels on it is it a rat? Sorry but no it is not!
FlashCadillac Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 rats are as much to do with the story behind the car than the bits thats have been bolted on and changed
Dalek Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Some american cars and some of the VW's look quite smart done like this (if it's done properly), but the Ghia with its sills hanging off looks like an MOT fail heap, why would you want your car to look like a wreck ? Most of the non american and vw's look really pants IMO Patina... LOL I love it when mags go on about this.. Patina = your paintwork is worn out and your chrome/trim is knackered I mean fair enough if you own a car and it's got like that over the years, you wouldn't make a car look like that on purpose though, would you ?
