X-pack-Glyn Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 With some of us having mortgages and young families, personaly i cant justify buying old rusty shells as projects anymore due to the extortionate costs the WE (the seller and consumer) and EBAY have helped push up to non affordable levels, so, im looking for alternatives that put the CHEAP back into cheap performance tuning. im currently looking in depth at varuos 7 type kits that start from around £2.5k for a good one, bare in mind thats new and i wont be paying for the privelage of chasing rust all the while. RWD is a top priority as is conventional engine/box an d axle layouts. Mazda MX5s fit in with whats needed quite well, IF i could put up with a convirtable and the horrid looks. also looking at old BMW 3 series and a few others. whats your thoughts, discuss.
sambo Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 I can totally sympathise with what your saying mate, the only reason i have 2 mk1's at the moment is cos my parents lent me a wad to buy the new one. I think the old Beemer is a good option, deffo cheap and fun. Or volvo??

I would say look at some of the more unusual cars.Pretty much anything with four doors for example,100e's can still be picked up for sensible money although I don't think that will last Later model Cortina's are still cheap too.You just need to think out of the box a little. My Fairlane for example cost about as much as you would pay for a rotten two door Escort and for that I get an original unwelded two owner 54,000 mile car.Sounds great,goes like stink and turns heads wherever it goes,what more do you need OK I only get 12 miles to the gallon but you can't have everything eh

sparkycapri Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 if you bide your time you can still pick up a bargin capris/cortinas/granadas for the £150 touch just got to look a bit harder. i know mk1 & 2 escorts arnt so cheap but that is about it . i know the days of picking up running driving t&t'd capris for £25 are gone but on the other hand what are you going to do with your project when you have finished it. sell it? back in 'the good old days' the car you've spent loads of time & hard earned cash on aint worth fook all! 5 years ago not many oldskool fords were worth the cost of a cheap respray i now cause i used to do them myself. for example people would bring along an average condition laser with a bit of rot around the headlight and say how much to fix that? well a new/good secondhand wing £35-50 is the only real way other than bodging with filler (give it 3 months at most) so youve got to cut off the old wing then repair/replace the wing rail cause they are always fooked then repair the bottom of the a panel/post cause there always knackerd then fit the wing (takes time to get it spot on)then paint it sods law its a metalic so paint down the side&across the bonnet to make it match and your into £500 easy. you could buy a mint one that some old grannys had for £450! people would say no unless they really loved the car cause you could always buy a better one for less money. so i think the increase in value can only be a good thing because now our cars values relates to somewere near what it cost to build. when i think back to the amount of good capris/cortinas&escorts ive bust up cause they just wernt worth doing it makes me feel pretty guilty. taxed& moted capris& cortinas sent round the banger track 2 or 3 a meeting just because of rusty wheel arches or sills anyway rant over sorry to go on it's yust my opinion any way

Nettles Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 I haven’t seen many tuned up Corsairs on OSF and I’ve only seen a couple of them from other clubs. Would deffo like to get one someday and marry it up with some serious power. The Corsairs that I have seen for sale seem to still be fairly cheap compared to other models. Deffo worth a look me thinks.
orionmojo Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 i've never liked the 'pointy cortina' it just dont appeal to me and i agree with nettles, semingly mint examples go for nowt. my next step is probably gonna be volvo stripped and caged street warrior. . proper t5 manual and a few surprised 'chalengers'
ADY Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I'd go for the beemer. I used to have a 325i e30, good car, rwd and plenty of power, and are not a bad price at the mo.
