Having returned from a recent Torque of the Devil Rolling Road day, kindly organised by MK1Gaz, I have a new, lower than previously seen power figure for my car.

I had previously seen around 195 bhp at Sanspeeds rollers on 3 occations, however, the latest figures revealed only 162.8 hp (estimated flywheel). I don't believe the engine to be sick, although, after 3 years of thrashing  it has probably loosened up

In all honesty I had been happy believing the higher figure but realistically had my doubts. Chris' dyno at TOTD has brought me down to earth, so with reluctance I set out to dis-prove my higher figures.

Available to everyone on-line are programs which will estimate power figures, with a reasonable degree of accuracy, using car weight and terminal speed, I have attached the results below.

I also stumbled across a calculator which would guess your mph at 60ft given your 60 ft time. Wow if this is true!

60ft.jpg

0-48 mph in 1.68 seconds, not bad for a 40+ year old, pre-crossflow! :D

The last thing is not the way to accurately work out HP but it shows how well the gearing, shifting, tyres, power, suspension etc is all working together, if, (and I suspect it is) Chris' dyno figure is right.

So there you have it!!

I am going to complete a head I have started, hopefully over Christmas, to try and get a bit nearer the magic 100 bhp / ltr. Without loosing any torque over 5,000 rpm.

Watch this space......

Always had my doubts about your 200bhp pre x flow

Surprised it took you so long to find that "quarter junior" programme !

I hope your'e gonna beef up your transmission again if you do hit the magic

100bhp x litre

Thanks guys. :oops::thumbsup:

I have got another cylinder head on the go at the moment so hopefully it will be faster this season. I have been in the ports being greedy and hit water (luckily it wasn't the good head off the car) so the little project has got bigger!! The head is at the welders, but we're not having much luck, so we might try some special brazing rods, or persist with the dissimilar welding rods. I have spent over 5 hours on the valves, I have plans for some "lateral thinking" valve guide mods.

Worryingly all of this work could be for nothing as I really am going away from "book" sizes and recommendations. Time will tell!! Attention to detail wont mean anything if too much port velocity is lost.

If it gains nothing at least I'll know I should have looked elsewhere for power!!:lol:

No worries mate, yes we were at Brackell the other week.

Can't help with any info on your crossflow mate, not right to have binned the bits without asking :ykt: . I'll ask about a bit, a friend of a friend had a hot crossflow in a Turner that did the speed trials, but crossflows aren't un-common!! Do you know what years he entered?

Its about £30 for the licence and £70 or 80 :? for two goes at the 1/4, but it is an enormous adreline rush - more than Pod, possibly cos of the money, possible cos you only get 1 pratice and 1 run that matters or possibly cos there's usually a fair crowd to see you fluff your one go!

As I used to say to Gaz :P Wallet!! Give it a go mate - there's no grip
