MK2Ed Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I saw this car at the brighton speed trials cant remember what year though, i absolutly love it,one of my favourite cars! Thanks Every year!! I would love to have a go at brighton, sounds like it costs a bomb to do it though, national a or b license or whatever is needed, is an arm and a leg on its own Its about £30 for the licence and £70 or 80 for two goes at the 1/4, but it is an enormous adreline rush - more than Pod, possibly cos of the money, possible cos you only get 1 pratice and 1 run that matters or possibly cos there's usually a fair crowd to see you fluff your one go! As I used to say to Gaz Wallet!! Give it a go mate - there's no grip No grip at all... Ask Jayson 2.3 pinto... 2.3's worth of torque says it all ...
MK2Ed Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 Right Toby... Where can I start... ...: Not too keen on it... Not quite my cup of tea... Hmmm it's OK but... Needs some gas... Nah... OK then.................................. Here we go...: Understated class... Eclectic mix of old and new... Fast... Used and abused... It's a winner... A class winner... When r u selling it ... ................... so I can put some Puff Daddy rims and a Zetec in it... Right enough deserved compliments when r u going to get ur name down for OSFDC so I can have a return match...
Toby Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 When r u selling it ... ................... so I can put some Puff Daddy rims and a Zetec in it... .edit.............when r u going to get ur name down for OSFDC so I can have a return match... You'll get your chance mate, I'll be at some if not all of the events. It's still not really ready though, got plans and no time.....
slappy Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 What can I say Toby one of my favorite cars forget bling wheels and dump valves this is the meaning of the word old skool I am selling all my V4 parts and all my cars are going precross
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 'To Cool For Skool' I think just about sums this car up! Go on the Old Skool Pre Crossflow Crew
Toby Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 There really is only one engine!! Oh and the side valve!!

Toby Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 Ok so a little up-date. Further to my Torque of the Devil rolling road shoot out organised by Gaz and Retro Ford mag I believed the reduced horse power figure of 163 and decided to look for more power. I had started a new cylinder head before Christmas, yes 6 months ago!!, and I planned to get the head done for Classic ford day, which I achieved. By putting it all together and spending some 5 o clock in the morning time on it!! So.... I ported the head and put the ports where I wanted them and the size I had spoken with Aaron at HT racing about. I was disappointed to find I had hit water in all of the ports. Due to my trade I know a really clever wealder and despite him saying he wouldn't be able to fix it we tried. He initially welded the ports and ground the excess weld off and spayed some crack testing die onto the welds. Sure enough, the weld has shrunk and cracked away from the walls. We decided he should weld all the holes up - I would grind the weld off and he would then weld all around the perimeter of the welds in the hope the smaller repair area would shrink and pull less. At this point we are not hopefull. So the ports were welded and I ground the welds off. It looked pretty pretty! I assembled the head onto a spare engine block, blocked off all the water outlets and pressure tested it with a hose pipe. And the news........ It leaked like a sieve! So..... I searched on the internet for some brazing / vacuum brazing ideas. Vacuum brazing was not an option because the concencous was that it would wreck a £5,000 vacuum pump. No reason in my mind not to try but they wouldn't have it!! So some "NASA" quality brazing rods were bought off the internet, which promised the earth - miracle fix!! We burried the head in fire bricks, heated the whole head up with a shrink wrap blow torch untill it was glowing red, then with oxy acetalene the repair areas were heated further and the braze was flowed into the cracks. The next day, after the head had cooled, I collected it from my friendly welder and over that weekend re-ported the braze out. I then reset my water test set up and pressure tested it...... Leaked like a sieve!! To be honest it was better but still it leaked a fine mist from some pourousity. I then purchased some CarGo Seal up http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... 2607&rs=gb from demon tweeks. This time I set the engine up inverted with a blow torch onto the head so I could heat the engine and add my Seal up at the temperature suggested and pressurise it. The block got as hot as a cup of tea and I poured in the leak stop. I then "jiggled" the block, under pressure and heat, the leaks stopped almost instantly. Result! The bottle says the Leak stop contains liquid glass and you can see copper dust (really fine) in suspension in the fluid - what ever it is I recommend it!!
morcheen Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 is 'leak stop' similar to something called 'k seal' i think ?
Toby Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 is 'leak stop' similar to something called 'k seal' i think ? Sorry mate - I don't know. I have looked on google and can't find my one. It sounds similar, but my product says it doesn't like anti-freeze and shouldn't be left in the engine, but the k seal say's it can be. EDIT: I couldn't find it cos I was looking for the name of a product I had made up See editted text - It's called Cargo Seal up - And it highly recommended
Toby Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 So back with the head saga..... Over the May bank holiday weekend I continued finishing off the new head and removed the 163 bhp original head in the quest to find more power - it had to be usable power - not just power at any cost, I am racing the clock - not the dyno!! On removing the head I inspected the bores and was overwhelmed with disapointment when I saw the number 4 piston had vertically polished the bore, there were no scores but I couldn't put it all together in the knowledge it wasn't right, the clock was ticking CF day was looming and now I had an engine build on my hands. Incidentaly number one push rod was bent too. So I pulled the engine, stripped it, ordered new shells, mains and rings, Asked Aaron at HT to lightly hone the bores - hopefully without removing to much metal so the new rings had a nice fresh surface to bed in to. I asked Aaron if he could squeeze it onto his dyno on the Friday before Classic Ford's weekend. I worked in the day and burnt the midnight candle, assembling, painting, and aiming for Friday's appointment with the dyno. Dead on my feet at 8am on Friday morning we loaded the engine into the van and took it to Brands Hatch so Aaron could get his magic hands on it. We bolted it onto the dyno and after changing the jetting, we swung the cam timing to no benefit, swung it the other way, no better, put it back where it was. The engine seems very sensitive to ignition timing with 1 degree making a big difference. The final settings were a compromise with Aaron saying the engine could really do with a mappable set up so the confines of the dizzy could be lost. With everything optimised the engine showed just over 171 bhp and 143 ft lbs. I swear I even saw one of Aarons eye brows move! So if the TOTD was right before, I had gained 8hp and 8 ft lbs. I was very pleased but would it convert to an improvement at the track? Saturday was spent with me and my Pit Crew "Slidelong" reinstalling the engine, to be honest he did far more than me as I was fading from lack of sleep. Thanks mate! By 5 o'clock the engine was in and we decided to call a rain check on the camping at Pod idea. A good nights sleep was in order!!
Toby Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Sunday morning another early start!! I loaded the car onto the A frame and headed off with Slidelong to CF day - we had made it!! The weather was not good and my poor car, which I had polished the day before ended up filthy from the road grime. When we got to Pod we changed the wheels to the slicks, polished off the grime and went to start the car for the first time. The first thing I noticed is there was no clicking from the electric fuel pump, we traced the fault to the fuel pump relay and wired it out, it was still switched by the ignition but just not fused. On turning the key the engine did nothing, the starter motor did nothing!! The solenoid did nothing. Luckily I had retained the solonoid under the bonnet with the button on the back so the engine can be started from under the bonnet and on pushing it the fresh engine lept in to life. For the first time I could feel the resposiveness of the new build under foot.
Toby Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 So in the fire up lane I warmed the engine and prepared for my first run. The weather was mild and humid and the track was slightly slippery. The car mananged a 12.78 (previous personal best was 12.67) on it's first run but hit the rev limiter hard 100 feet or so before the line. It crossed the line at 99.4 mph but felt stronger than before for sure. Due to me trying to keep the car looking pretty original (as far as possible) I had tucked the rev limiter up under the slam panel so without a really short special screw driver I would struggle to adjust it, so I took the fatal decision to unplug it Two more runs and the car had run a new PB and a new personal best terminal speed - and all of this on potentially the wrong gearing now and in not ideal weather. My PB's were 12.67 @ 101.9 mph to now 12.58 @ 103.2, the 1 mph indicates a definate improvement in HP so I was really pleased, I may even scrape a 12.4 on a better day. All of this from a fairly complete, heater, glass, seats, carpet etc, pre-crossflow powered, MK1 Cortina. Chuffed!!
Toby Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Then I decided to have a rev off with the Retro Ford Duratec!! :dope: The engine dropped a follower Why am I such a tit!! Maybe it was weakend by the bent pushrod I mentioned earlier which could have set up problems in the follower, maybe it's the new spring set up I'm running, or maybe it was just foot and fool related!!
Admin Mk2Jo Posted June 9, 2008 Author Admin Report Posted June 9, 2008 Toby, hope you get it all sorted mate Red mist is a terrible thing What you gonna do about the gearing now then?
Toby Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Toby, hope you get it all sorted mate Red mist is a terrible thing What you gonna do about the gearing now then? It was more of a victory roll than red mist. To be fair, Maveric got in trouble when he blasted the tower in Top Gun 20 odd years ago!! You MIGHT have thought I would have grown up by now!! The funny thing is I tell EVERYONE to get a rev limiter and then what do I go and do.....?? Think I'll go up a diff (taller) as the power curve is seriously on the way down when the engine is flat out like that.....it's all a bit of educated guess as well you know!!
5hane Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 the engine showed just over 171 bhp and 143 ft lbs!! some one give this man a COOKIE!!! wow thats impressive !!!!!!!!!!1
Admin Mk2Jo Posted June 10, 2008 Author Admin Report Posted June 10, 2008 Think I'll go up a diff (taller) as the power curve is seriously on the way down when the engine is flat out like that.....it's all a bit of educated guess as well you know!!
MK2Ed Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Interesting......... There wasn't a lot of fat left in that timescale mate - pressure eh... [ You MIGHT have thought I would have grown up by now!! : Might being the operative word eh... for all of us What diff are u running at the moment if u don't mind me asking....?
Toby Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 What diff are u running at the moment if u don't mind me asking....? I don't mind you asking at all mate!
Fiesta Steve Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Good story Tody Glad the engine came good in the end and with more to come hopefully Shame about the cam. Was it the same follower that the rod bent on ?
Toby Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Good story Tody Was it the same follower that the rod bent on ? Yes mate
