Thanks guys

It all came back form hardening on Wednesday as promised. The trouble I've had now is some of the internal splines and bores were finished prior to hardening. The metal has shrunk by about 0.1mm in over all diameter so I have had to re-machine all the inside diameters to get them on the shafts.

I left work at 2.00am last night having had no dinner. The main shaft is assembled but I still have the lay shaft to finish. Pic's to follow.

I am seriously impressed Toby. Fingers crossed it all works as planned

Thanks mate  I spent about 4hrs today trying to get 5th on the lay shaft. I eventually gave up and re-machined the spline.

I was hoping to get it in the car today, but everything always takes longer than you think!! :ykt: (except sex! )

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

It's in. The mount is made but needs some paint on it. The handbrake cable runs over the mount on a Mk1 so that was another issue I was up against. I wanted it finished this weekend, but I didn't even get as far as building the diff - let alone fitting it. Another busy week coming up! :dope:

A little up-date.

I finished at 4am this morning - overslept for work

I modified the gearbox mount I'd made as it was all sitting a bit low - much improved but you wouldn't put the welding on your mantlepiece!

I built the diff and fitted it last night.

I bought the 4 bolts I needed for the gearbox mount as I was seeing a customer near the bolt shop today.

The home made gear lever was fitted at lunch time - I then took it off my mates ramp thinking I would put in back in my garage.

Before I knew it I was up the road in 5th. It's quiet and changes gear so sweetly!! I'm not sure I've got the confidence to give it any stick but at some point I'm going to have to - or it will be like driving Miss Daisey along Madeira Drive

Maybe give it another try later... :D
