Dom Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 Whilst rumbling around town at night in the capper, stalking chavs and barry's in car parks, I have noticed something that I am not happy about. At work i'm smug since my car is the oldest, best looking and most importantly one of the fastest, but now people are buying things like fiesta ST150's, focus ST's, Astras, clios etc etc and it's starting to wind me up Hammer down in the fast lane of the A1 and could I get rid of that Audi A2 up my arse? Like fook I could. Shitty little 1.4 derv turbo. I can understand a hot hatch leaving me behing, but not a horrid box with wheels driven by what might as well have been my grandma! Something must be done. What engine, gearbox and bits do I need? What suspension, brake setups? Whenever I see some plank giving it some in his crappy modern piece of plastic I wanna smile to myself knowing that i'm not going to race him cos my cars so much better not because I know i'll get slaughtered.
Mr Sam Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 i had exactamundo the same problem f00kin A2 i pass it........so it overtakes, so i scream past out of spite back at it.....so it gets me when we reach a hill yet i scream past a Ka bodykited low fart can etc, he then boots it as do i and leave him its those yuppie cars that get you, still i can content myself that an A2 may well have the edge down a motorway but i couldnt see it keeping up with me down a back road
flyingbanana Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 are you the guilty one putting skid marks on the a1?
Dom Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Posted October 27, 2007 Depends where I only take responsibility for the ones from The Black Cat up to just after the A1M starts, thats my turf Oh and the roundabout just in front of Wyboston Lakes
flyingbanana Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 yep ...thought they might have been you.....has to be done
Pipster007 Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 You have to put into perpective the age and amount of technology gained in 20yrs. Imagine a 1950 Riley RMC Roadster (as shown below) In its day, it was a sporting tourer that was a car to be desired..........Then in 1970, the MK1 Escort was launched and was found to be a car that was able to keep up with the older Riley, and was also able to carry extra people in comfort. I can only imagine the old Riley driver saying the same thing as yourself, Dom. Now 20 yrs of diesel technology has advanced so much, that 20 yrs ago diesel was never considered to ever be a perfomance engine. Now look forward 20yrs, I can only imagine that LPG or battery power will be up there competing with oil based fuels. Then you can look forward to beating a 20y/o Clio being beaten by, in essence, a milk float
bmxdave Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 A 24v cossie will do the job For a while anyway. It has around the same power with a decent filter and exhaust as one of the ST's but you not have the advantage of lightweight but rear wheel drive.
Admin Vista Posted October 28, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 28, 2007 TBH I'm not surprised you had trouble shaking an A2 diesel, The A2 was the world's first high-volume production car with a bodyshell built entirely from weight-saving aluminium. Think about it, a heavy old steel capri probably sporting a pinto that's a little long in the tooth, against an all aluminium alloy lightweight A2 with a torquey modern turbo diesel. It may have only 75bhp, but how many horses do you think are left in your pinto?
RETRO_AL Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 I dont have any problems smoking new shite
oliwally Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 but you not have the advantage of lightweight but rear wheel drive. Should do,modern cars are filled with loads of crap. Most small modern cars weigh more than a tonne,A saxo is heavier than a mk2 golf gti by 40kg and the golf is heavier than a mk1 escort. Capri's are around 1200,the st is near 1250 i think.
Guest MK1gaz Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 The new shites not all that really unless it's some £60,000 500 bhp M5 or something . All those Audi A2 diesils etc are dog poo and if you can't whoop one of them then get an engine A.S.A.P.
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Who needs the power when you have the style I had a similar conversation with a mate of mine, he has a Renault Laguna Baccara 3.0 V6. Don't get me wrong, I know it's French (& shite), but a lovley motor with alot of power, a real 'wolf in sheeps clothing'. He said his will pee all over my Capri, but I said "That maybe so, but I have more style than you, and mine is worth more money". He had to agree there
Noodles Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Its those little starlet turbos that are coming over you gotta watch
V8ian Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Modern automotive weight loss is a load of old Tosh, Mk1 escort RS2000, about 900/925kg Focus ST comes in around 1320kg, even with rough maths that is about 400kg, or 880lbs in old money, that’s coming up in my books as getting on for nearly HALF A TON!!!!!!!, that’s a fookin lot of weight extra to carry, its not hard to see why most of the reasonably powered OSF cars can cope with the more modern cars today, Of course there will be exceptions, OK the A2 is lightish but put it up against a Mk1 Escort and they are about the same weight, So much for 30 years of technology, I would think most of the weight is in the Trim, I know you can loose 500lbs++ by stripping out a 3 series interior, more if the car is a hi spec, mostly down to driver comfort, New cars have to have AirCon, Air Bags, Seat belt tensioners, Electric seats and Windows. Multi Speaker stereo, Look at the depth of a Focus Dash, or any modern car for that matter and most of it is full of creature comforts, all adds up to more and more weight, Even look at the size if the A post on a modern car against the A post of a escort, you could probably get ten of the escorts in 1 focus a post. Imagine the weight saving on a Mk1 Escort if you used the same body mouldings and pressed the body from modern Hi Tensile steels, you could probably lose another 100lbs! I have my Fun car, The Cortina, and have great fun playing with AMG55s and M5s, and I have my Daily Driver, but I know what car I would drive to Scotland in, My MODERN CAR, that’s because it has all the modern features that I have listed above, and I would not be without them
Copey Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 tbh comfy seat and a CD player and i am more than happy, want air-con? open the window!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 All the shite on the new plastic is mostly stuff you never use anyway . Adjust electric seat once , adjust electric mirror once , turn off traction control , central locking that never works , electric windows that squeak slowly down and stick , cup holders for holding tea , 10 speed heater when you only need fast or slow , A.B.S. that's shite and always has a fault light up , C.D. players that jump , rain sensitive wipers because you may not know it's raining , parking sensors , 200 kilos of duvet sound proofing to mask the clatter of some smokey + smelly old diesil engine etc etc . Just buy a £500 3.5 litre bmw 7 or 5 series if you want a comfy barge to burn about in

Sorry, i meant to say 'not only do you have the advantage'. The modern cars full of anti crash bars on the doors, a million airbags, in built parking sensors, cameras, sat nav, tele's, dvd and cd autochangers, a billion speakers, it all adds up. Put it this way. A standard Saxo VTS has about 118bhp. Knowing most boy racers its probably got a freeflow filter and a 31/2 inch exhaust. Any gain made by the the air filter has probably been doubly lost in back pressure. So we are talking 110bhp. The car isnt exactly light to start with, but put one of those sub boxes in the boot, add two amps, and about 8 speakers as well as 5 complete and utter idots and youve got the power to weight ratio of a turtle. All you need to do is strip as much as you can for now, and do as much as possble for as little as possible to the engine such as basic stuff like filters and removing a back box, while you save up and collect parts for a cossie 24v or yb or an already built tuned pinto or essex and your sorted
