MK2Ed Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Nice Capri Would have liked to have been there... Gaz if you do one next year my names down... How did Tony (talk you under the table) Mr Petrolhead01 do
Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Gaz if you do one next year my names down... How did Tony (talk you under the table) Mr Petrolhead01 do We'll do one next year for sure as any excuse for a rev up i say . I think Tonys tasty 100E was about 184 bhp but he'll tell you later i'm sure
oliwally Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 I think Tonys tasty ZETEC was about 184 bhp but he'll tell you later i'm sure Do my eyes decive me
Admin Mk2Jo Posted December 2, 2007 Admin Report Posted December 2, 2007 Thanks Mike, constructive critism mate, no worries, you really cant compare chassis dyno's with engine dyno's though, i have personally mapped an engine on HT racings superflow engine dyno, the trumpets on your carbs are very close to the innerwing on your escy and that would have not been the case when it was on HT's dyno, I truly belive your engine when it was on aarons engine dyno made what you quote, but it can vary when in the car with a hot rad in front of it. as far as the cossy goes, different dyno cooling fan/fuel in the tank/and intake air temps can all have an effect on what a car makes, and also if the dyno was set up correctly before the run, can you post up the graph from today and the one from my home town of marlow?, be interesting to see the specs. thank you for the kind comments about TOTD by the way, its how i wanted the place to be, clean and professional. chris Hello mate. Yeah i will scan them at work tomorrow, then you can compare. I remember what you were saying about the trumpets too. Might be worth me getting a cold air feed in there somehow. Mike, could you put both charts up here and maybe Chris could explain them to us so that we can understand how things can differ so much Thanks guys
DEP Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 I would just like to add, even thou my car did nt quite produce what i was expecting, i was still very happy with the figure. When the Motec and new fuel pump was all fitted at SAS, they could nt give me an accurate figure because the car kept losing traction on the rolling road and kept trying to jump off For me its what the car does on the road, so i think 360 bhp is plenty for me As Jo and Kerime said......"Its a bit of an animal" Thanks again Chris and all the team at TOTD

Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Ok tony nice one fella , you motor sounded the tits on there and outside when you left
petrolhead01 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Hi guys, just a quick word on the dyno figures. Some/most of you had figures today lower than what you have had on the rollers in the past, this happens quite often on dyno days at TOTD. I believe our dyno (and all dyno dynamics) dyno's to be extremely accurate, I had the choice to buy whatever dyno I wanted 9 months ago and chose dyno dynamics over all others, i didnt rush into this, i spoke to various other engine tuners and others who already used them. most other dyno's use the "overun coast down losses" method of estimating flywheel horsepower (note: NO chassis dyno can measure flywheel horsepower, its purely an estimate), but how can you measure transmission losses on the overun?, transmission losses grow the more power you make! I believe my dyno is the most accurate chassis dyno i have used in 12 years, do your other dyno operators correct for barometric pressure, relative humidity and intake air temperatures?, might be worth asking the question at your next dyno shoot out day, anyway, enough waffling on, i believe a standard pinto made 102 bhp today which is good enough for me. THE ONLY WAY to measure the true flywheel horsepower of your engines is to remove the engine from the car and run it on a corrected engine dynamometer. loved the cars today, some were truly stunning, keep up the great work! i'm off to look around this great forum now. chris as others have said, wicked day, great atmosphere, and a lovely dyno set up well impressed with the days organisatiion and professionalism, a credit to you guys ,, i will definatly see you again in the future!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Yes only compare your power figuires with other cars that ran on the day and not your mates ones that have been power tested elsewhere . For example my engine made over 250 bhp elsewhere but only 212 bhp on the dyno-dynamics (196 bhp yesterday with the air filter on ) and i know first hand what it's like when people say "but that's crap , it should be blah , blah , blah , bhp at that spec" . The problem is they haven't ran their's on this dyno so they can't compare their numbers to yours . You'll notice yesterday that some very fast and cracking built single cam 8v engines all made similar power to each other and all these engines will make approx an extra 30+ bhp on some different dynos which calculate power in a different way to this one does . I know it's annoying and especially if you've just built/bought a trick engine but don't worry because whoever moans at you then just send them packing with a "well take yours down there and see what you got" remark . Chris has had 2x vauxhall XE powered hot rods in last week which both hit over 220bhp on a set of 48's so it can be done and foooooook knows how much power they would make somewhere else then !!!!!!!! . We all now know that this rolling road reads lower than everywhere else without a dyno-dynamics rolling road and lower than H.T. racings engine dyno but that's the problem with obtaining power readings , they mean nothing unless using THE SAME machine that does the measuring P.S. don't i go on !!!!!!!
Mk 1 Mark Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Would like to add,I had a very enjoyable time a TOTD... Very nice people and very professional set up. Thanks for the Teas and the bacon rolls,And to everyone that took there cars on the day And i would also like to say if your cars drives as it should and your happy with it then thats all that matters... No rolling road is ever that same...So if your car did seem under powered on the rolling road, Goes to show how well you guys are going @ the POD and Trackdays in your slightly underpowered cars Oh Thanks again for organising it
Col-ashtonmobile Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 got to agree with everything mark said there just sorry we missed it our van was ready to rock but work took over , jo text me during the day and kept me posted so well done everyone
alladdin Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 well done chris for having the balls to run (what seems to be) an accurate machine
Toby Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 well done chris for having the balls to run (what seems to be) an accurate machine My neighbour said "he wont keep many customer as that's not the figures people want to hear " I think it's true that people want to see lots of power per pound spent, but serious engine builders want factual results. I was disappointed to have "lost" 30 odd hp's in what I'd previously seen, but it has also made me think I should look for some more power now. I for one appreciate the honesty of this Rolling Road. And don't think telling the truth, or being honest will cost anyone any custom!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Exactly Toby , the bloke who built my engine thought i was winding him up when he got the power figuires after Chris had mapped it . He's just built a zetec with 290 bhp so i'll get him to bring it down to the next rolling road day and see what the difference is on the dyno-dynamics "horsepower bandit"

Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Were not moaning about the D.I.Y. though like they do !!!!!
Twinkle Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 well done chris for having the balls to run (what seems to be) an accurate machine My neighbour said "he wont keep many customer as that's not the figures people want to hear " I think it's true that people want to see lots of power per pound spent, but serious engine builders want factual results. And don't think telling the truth, or being honest will cost anyone any custom!! just looking at the results from my standard 2.0 pinto with the only mod being no airfilter and an ashley system i would say it gives 100% accurate reading as i got 102bhp whereas if i had gone to one of the others it would of been around 130/140bhp which would just be an unbeleivable figure for a standard engine!! was a great day and i know where i will be going with my future builds
chris@torque of the devil Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 great to hear so many great comments from you guys, its true, everyone wants to believe the higher power figures they have got, but have you ever thought about believing the lower ones?, they could be closer to the truth?, just leaves more room for improvement in my opinion, yes my dyno does not seem to flatter but oh my god is it repeatable once an engine has stabilised after a few runs, I can see the difference a few degrees of timing makes when mapping or setting up a car, I have tuned many a car over the years on a different dyno that calculates transmission losses on coastdown, I used to believe that dyno was very accurate, one thing it wasnt though was consistent, i have had many a customer from my previous employment follow me to Torque of the Devil, they are starting a fresh with the power figures now and accept that a 6 month old "latest technology" dyno may be reading a little bit more accurately than a 20 year old unit. We open our dyno to independent tuners regularly, they appreciate the repeatability and accuracy that the Dyno Dynamics units offer, Mclaren road car division were down with us recently for me to map a road mule development car with a 550 bhp 7 litre chevy V8 in it, the engine was only in there to develop the car but it was the power they wanted to replicate when the car is finalised with its "proper" engine, anyway, i could rabbit for days............. i was seriously impressed with how friendly you lot were and how awseome some of the cars performed, 2.0 8v pinto engines developing more power than late model, fuel injected multivalved highly efficient alloy units!, thats what you guys should be comparing against, truly incredible!
Fiesta Steve Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Out of interest Chris, how much power does your own car make on your own rollers ?
chris@torque of the devil Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 lol, I have no idea fella, have not run it yet, showed 270 no gas on PE dyno, so 250 i would assume, will let you know if i can be arsed to get it out of the garage some day
Fiesta Steve Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 lol, its a very impressive car anyhow
chris@torque of the devil Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 cheers fella, building a new ST170 Zetec Turbo engine for it full of the good bits, should be quicker one day, (when i get the time to do it)
Guest MK1gaz Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Don't you mean a zetec ST150 engine as they never make 170 bhp out the showroom wrapped up in a plastic family shopper
