great to hear so many great comments from you guys, its true, everyone wants to believe the higher power figures they have got, but have you ever thought about believing the lower ones?, they could be closer to the truth?, just leaves more room for improvement in my opinion, yes my dyno does not seem to flatter but oh my god is it repeatable once an engine has stabilised after a few runs, I can see the difference a few degrees of timing makes when mapping or setting up a car, I have tuned many a car over the years on a different dyno that calculates transmission losses on coastdown, I used to believe that dyno was very accurate, one thing it wasnt though was consistent, i have had many a customer from my previous employment follow me to Torque of the Devil, they are starting a fresh with the power figures now and accept that a 6 month old "latest technology" dyno may be reading a little bit more accurately than a 20 year old unit.

We open our dyno to independent tuners regularly, they appreciate the repeatability and accuracy that the Dyno Dynamics units offer, Mclaren road car division were down with us recently for me to map a road mule development car with a 550 bhp 7 litre chevy V8 in it, the engine was only in there to develop the car but it was the power they wanted to replicate when the car is finalised with its "proper" engine, anyway, i could rabbit for days.............

i was seriously impressed with how friendly you lot were and how awseome some of the cars performed, 2.0 8v pinto engines developing more power than late model, fuel injected multivalved highly efficient alloy units!, thats what you guys should be comparing against, truly incredible!

hi mate do you have the softwear to map weber alpha ecu.s?

Posted

At TOTD i got

122.5bhp

130 lbft

At Track and Road i got

140bhp

135lbft

18bhp and 5lbft in a year and a bit is not bad...

and being totaly different rollers both cant be far wrong surely?!?

still had a gr8 day and made it home in one piece!!

thanks to all

oh when can we see this in the mag?? 1 2 3 months??

Darran Moss from Escort Tec has a H.T. racing 2.2 pinto as his was 211 bhp at Track n Road and 208 bhp at Sanspeed . He was unfortunately unable to attend the Torque of the Devil dyno day yesterday which was a shame because then we could have compared the 3 results . I'll drag him down there myself later though !!!!!!!:thumbsup:

I can answer this one Tony , no he hasn't . Southern carbs and injection can't do it either now because the rolling road operator left so they've shut down the rolling road :dope:

Chris, how much does an 'average' RR tune cost? I know its different for everyone but i need to know a rough guestimate so i can sort out a budget for it.

Also can you map a megajolt ecu? From everyones comments i'd quite like you to set my car up for me

we charge dyno time out for mapping/tuning at £90 an hour plus vat, we dont round up the hours to the nearest one, we just charge what we take, megajolt can be done if you have the ecu lead and a copy of the software for my laptop, i map most management system (except weber alpha) lol

Just a little correction

It made 211 bhp 174 torque on hts dyno

208 bhp 172 torque at r@track.

Which says to me thats spot on with the dyno.

Its been built for 2 1/2 years now and not missed a beat and everyone thats seen the car will no its gets used hard.

I have been looking into 16v engines to upgrade my pinto and can't find anything better...or should i say anything better under £10k.

As has been said on here my pinto made 232bhp at sanspeed before i brought it,one of the best they had made

just keeping things accurate

standard pinto's rock my world!!

102.6bhp and 117lb/ft torque

get in there

Nice one

Don't sound like an under read to me  sounds exactly like what i've had before from a well loosend standard ish pinto thats in good condition and fairly well setup 8)

you'll allways loose power over time unless you tuine the thing weekly

did any 2.8 colgnes turn up for a power run?

Cool, you'll probably get a call from me soon then

Re the megajolt, i can't get it to talk to a lap top with the usb to serial lead but i've got a laptop that talks to it perfectly via serial to serial lead - if your computer doesn't wanna talk to it would it work using mine?

cheers mate :D

That's not accurate though mr retro is it ? Darrans pinto MADE 208 bhp at sanspeed NOT 235 bhp and MADE 211 bhp at Track n road . So track n road reads higher than Sanspeed in this engines case

It is interesting seeing peoples comments on the varying bhp from different dynos!!!

From my point of view I will keep using sanspeeds dyno because I know the figures that other engines My Grandad has built so it gives a good basis for comparison!!!

In reality I dont care if my engine has 5 or 500 bhp, as long as it goes well and produces good figures in comparison to others run on the same dyno, I am a happy Bunny!!!

Good way to be Harris-hpe  ...i don't even care about the hp, if it flys then thats fine with me...standard xflow in my old mk2 tina went real well even before i cammed it...and pissed a few newer cars off :lol:

All true mate, appart from the not caring bit!! Truth is the cars at the RR all go really well and are great fun, personally speaking, mine does good 1/4's, and from the results there is potentially more in it - although it may be hard to find :ykt::lol:

Maybe peek power is also not that important. If you go on the online performance calculators available, put in the terminal speed (101.6) and 2020lbs weight they tend to come up with 165 hp.

If you put in 12.68 and 2020lbs it says 195 hp. It's all a guess but the clock is all that REALLY matters if your racing (track or street) Drivability is a bonus too!!

From a tuning perspective the important thing is to use the same proceedures and equipment every time, and I do take on board Chris's point about air pressure / temps. One time I went to sanspeeds I took 48's with me and changed over there, so I could get a before and after figure on the same day, this is the only way to not let weather conditions affect results without compensating for it.

I did think I was looking for 5hp not 25 though!! :lol::lol:

Gaz ..thats a quote from Darran... he should know ..
Darran will tell you that his engine made 208 bhp at Sanspeed and 211 bhp at track n road , his numbers in the Escort-tec section

Exactly James :ykt: .

So, basically every rolling road reads completely different from the last then!???

My engine made 200.9bhp at Gerald Dale Motorsport a few weeks back, but his rollers are like antiques!!! I have some new carbs to go on 48's as opposed to knackered 50's so it'll be interesting what it makes then.

Where is Torque of the devil?..........

Hi all,

Sorry i could'nt make it at the weekend, had a few probs at home, spoke to gaz in the week just to explain :(

Anyway had good news today so all ok

Right my car!!

211bhp on the dyno

208bhp at road and track

208bhp at sanspeed (a few weeks ago)

When i brought the engine it had made 232 at sanspeed but not in my car.

That was back when most 2.2 pintos were being quoted at 220bhp ++

Maybe wheel spinning????

More accurate ways of reading the power now.

Arron at ht said mine has probaly past its peak,as its a few years old now,so maybe down a couple of hp.

But still knocks out a 12.8 1/4 ,with steel panels/glass etc. :mrgreen::ykt::thumbsup:

Not much difference between those readings then . So does this mean we can compare readings from H.T.'s engine dyno to Sanspeed and to Track n Road's rolling roads (all very similar in this case) :? . Or then again maybe not  .
