MK II Mark Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 I have heard that people are buying cooking oil at Tescos now instead of Diesel at the pumps cos its alot cheaper but Tescos won't sell more than three litres to one person as they have cracked on to what everyones doing. Do you have to put any additives in for it to combust?
Twinkle Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 mix it with some diesel and ideally it could do with warming up before it hits the engine
Tom Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 google it mate. I think you're supposed to mix in some acetone? something like that - i watched it on mythbusters the other day
bomber1 Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 i belive as long as its no more than a 50/50 mix u will get away with it. if its all cooking oil u need a table spoon of white spirit to a 50gallon drum and leave it for a couple of months
young un Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 google it mate. I think you're supposed to mix in some acetone? something like that - i watched it on mythbusters the other day mythbusters is cool
bortaf Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Depends on what engine, HDI's don't like the extra viscosaty (you know thickness cos i can't spell) Di transits will run happy 50/50 but i use 75%/diesel/25% new cooking oil in the winter The ford 1.8 diesel will run the same IF you DON'T have a lucas pump, apparently they have seals that don't like cooking oil Unused oil has a higher calorific value than diesel so burns hotter, the upside in a transit is 5 MPG more, a lot quieter and smoother and i swear more power, possably why i get more MPG cos i don't drive it hard, downside it smells like a wok ! Used cooking oil i whole different matter Tescos had cheapo cooking oil at 56p per litre at the mo but only available in 1 ltr bottles, go to a trade warehouse and it'll be around 60p per ltr for a 25Ltr drum
Mick The Cabbie Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 I'd use it if I was running an older diesel motor. I'm a bit scared to put it in my Mondello TDCi though. If it fooks up, it'll cost me £££££££'s. A few years ago, I worked at the airport. I ran my Pug 205 turbodiesel on a 50/50 mix of diesel & aviation fuel.
bortaf Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 just sold a 205 TD ran that on 50/50 diesel/cooking oil, fricken loved it went to bath and back on just over a tenna, got hungry at every set of lights though, cost extra in food what i saved on fuel
luz008 Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 'a friend' used to run 306 HDI on about 40% veg oil for a year and had no problems. but of course i would not advertise this online as you are ment to delare it and pay tax you can also order bio-diesel (treated veg oil) from online companies and that works fine as a replacement for diesel but normally its about 1000 ltrs min - but only costs about 70p/ltr there arent many bio-diesel stations around here which is a shame as its only about 70-80p litre
MK II Mark Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 I've got a GT TDI golf and was considering running a mix of cooking oil and diesel, is it safe to do with the VW engine?
mk3cokebottle Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 one of my dads mates goes to the local chippy and buys there used oil because it is alot thinner when it has been used he then chucks it through a siv and mix's it with a little derv and his transit runs all day long quite happy, think he gives fiver a drum for it, all of the oil suppliers 7.5t trucks run on dirty cooking oil aswell i was amazed when i started supplying drivers to a company in southampton and they told the driver to fill up with oil at there pumps
beedz Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 i ran my old 306 on the stuff no probs. definately smoother & more power. works fine with a bosch pump, but the lucas ones use the fuel to lubricate themselves and as the veg oil is thicker it buggers them up
Fiesta Steve Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 works fine with a bosch pump, but the lucas ones use the fuel to lubricate themselves and as the veg oil is thicker it buggers them up Tis true
Messenjah Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 you should declare the tax and pay it IF you are using over 2500 litres a year
bortaf Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 you should declare the tax and pay it IF you are using over 2500 litres a year spot on! you get 2500 ltr free before paying any tax so it's NOT illeagal Used cooking oil has a lower calorific value, as it's been heated and reheated it looses some of it's ooomph (sorry to be so techy here ) it also doesn't lube as well as new oil your supossed to washup used oil to remove the saopy fat that builds up in it Reclaimed veg oil round here is 89p per litre, look for a black cab company or garage, there will be a place selling very nearby!!
MK II Mark Posted December 8, 2007 Author Report Posted December 8, 2007 how can anyone prove yo have used over 2500 litres in a year
alladdin Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 you should declare the tax and pay it IF you are using over 2500 litres a year spot on! you get 2500 ltr free before paying any tax so it's NOT illeagal : i wouldnt think thats right. the tax is road fuel tax, wont matter what it is, if its used for transport u must pay tax. as for used oil, i agree as above, but worse, its been used to cook chicken etc so contains ANIMAL FAT, this will go hard when cold(lard) and form a skin/blockage. its often thined with kerosene. ie heating oil (avi fuel?) but this wont lube so dont use it strait
ADY Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 you should declare the tax and pay it IF you are using over 2500 litres a year spot on! you get 2500 ltr free before paying any tax so it's NOT illeagal : This is true I use fresh cooking oil in my diesel, in the summer i can virtually run it neat, now though it has trouble starting even on 50/50 mix with diesel, but then my car is old with a few miles on the clock!
