Wessie Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 try and weld a bolt onto the end of it, put a socket on the bolt - job done
action dan Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 need to find a good welder freind then lol any other options?
hellblue Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 If your going to do it DO IT BIG if its a cheap extractor you may be able to drill that out & start again bet it was one of them cone shapped ones what stud is it ? you may also be able to drill it right out & re tape the hole ?
Rick Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 is the stud extractor hardened steel? if so that makes it more difficult lol if its normal steel just drill it out and then retap the thread
action dan Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 TUNGSTEN oh dear i'm ruined aint i !!!!!
Wessie Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 drill it and tap it, and see if that works, if not turn the block upside down, shake it and it might fall out well its worth a try
bortaf Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I feel for ya mate done the same a few times meself, a DECENT drill but will do it but no cheap B&Q ones
action dan Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 it is a draper expert stud extractor and its the bolt that holds the water pump/alternator braket on i've tried using the drill bits that came with the set dont seem to be working
mk2harrier Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 your not the first and definately wont be the last. the last one i did was just inside the hole, so no welding, and was hardened steel. i think your only option is to drill it out using high pressure/torque slow speed and then re tap it. good luck!
V8ian Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Stud extractors are really a last resort, I hate the things, I have spent more time removeing broken extractors for people than broken bolts and studs,at the end of the day, if you cant get the broken bit out, you have 2 choices, leave it out and see if you can get away with it, or remove the block, take it down to a good engineering shop and get it spark erroded out Possible ways of getting out can be with a small grinder/dremmel cut a slot in the top pf the extractor and bolt and with a GOOD screwdriver screw it inwards, then out, heat and WD40 may help before you try this, , I would have suggested you try welding a nut onto it but it sounds as if it may have broken too low to do this Good luck!!!
flyingbanana Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 heat it up before you try extracting again if u can
action dan Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 but i want a really easy option i relly cant be arsed to take the motor out. Do you mean a die grinder type of thing?
V8ian Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 a small cutting wheel would robably do, igf you can get a die grinder in there with a small diamond tip, you coud possibly get away with that.
Toby Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 If you grind a masonary drill to cut like a normal drill it will almost definately cope with the extractor hardness. Your problem will be if it goes off centre cos the soft stuff will drill so much easier so it will tend to want to wonder. Once you have a hole in the stud, I have found the best way to get studs out is to grind a slow tapered square on something hard like a drill shank. Gently hammer that in to the hole you have drilled, it should behave a bit like an allen key. The trouble with the stud extracter is they try to expand the stud in the hole which tends to make the situation worse. Heat will no doubt help. I have a sparker if your really stuck and end up having to take the engine out. Good luck, don't mess the block up
action dan Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 well i think i'll have to take the motor out and go from there thanks for all the advice when i get the motor out later and decide what to do
action dan Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 a welder some jd and plenty of marlboro's and we have it fixed thanks to all for advice
Toby Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 a welder some jd and plenty of marlboro's and we have it fixed thanks to all for advice YAY!!
RS264 Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 not a good feeling when this happens.. I snapped an Ezy out trying to retrieve a broken stud on the exhaust side in the RS. Had to drive it into town and had a bloke work a couple of hours on it. Won't be doing that again in a hurry!
