EMISSIONS TEST, PASS :)

I took my Fiesta for MOT today and it failed on the emissions only.

 

This is the thrid time I've MOT'ed this car and its always gone straight through but I didn't use the car this winter and just dragged it off the front garden this morning with a seized clutch !!

 

Anyhow, my emissions are 9.56% the limit is <=4.5%

 

The tester screwed in the screwy thing on the carb and got it down to 9.56% and turning the other way it went up to 11%

 

Does anyone know what the problem might be or any common faults with these old twin choke weber things, personally, I'm not familiar with these carbs and usually take them off and put some DCOE's on !! lol

 

Its a standard 1300 engine

Clean or renew plugs, check timings ok and take it for a good long run to get it nice and warm and blow the crap out! Always worked for me!

9% on a 1300!! wow that is high, gotta be the normal mate, timing, plugs and points

Just smash it off

Take it to a more "friendly" MOT man

And check the valve clearances.

I've checked the timing and its spot on.

 

I've checked the valve clearences as I thought the exhausts may have closed up due to VSR, but they were actually on the large side as were the inlets, I've never adjusted them so it needed doing. But I'll probably be getting more fuel in now

 

I've cleaned the plugs, they didn't look too bad and arn't too old.

 

It hasn't got points as its elecy ignition

 

 

The problem is not being able to check it myself as I haven't got the equiment so need to get it right first time so when I take it back it'll pass.

 

So keep any ideas coming

Could be a worn mixture screw or blocked air jets.

pull a vacuum pipe off steve, it'l make it run leaner (not the servo pipe though!! ) Does it idle ok? the float level may be too high

if its sat for a bit i would remove the top of the carb- carefull of the gasket though, and make sure the needle valve is shutting off properly. could just be a sticky float due to being st about- could also be crap int he float bowl due to standing - wouldnt make it run rich though.

I'll try pulling a pipe off, and yes it idle's fine

Have you tried changing the engine oil Steve? Also stick new filters in. I have seen this a few times and what happens is the oil gets contaminated with fuel over time, so when it splashes up the bores, you get a higher CO reading due to the fuel in the oil

are you sure you have to emission test it as when i took the mk1 they didnt test mine im sure if its over a certain age they dont have to?

Lets just say the oil been in there a while

 

It changes itself, it does use a bit and I just top it up

 

If it is burning oil that could be contanminated by fuel, then its worth a shot.

Ok, just looking down the smoking barrels and the fuel appears to be dripping down the carb rather than a mist or spray.

 

Then I see something stuck down one of the barrels !! Pulled it out with some long nose pilers, it was a bit of foam or something !!!! I think that may have been the problem.

 

But, it still seems to be dripping a lot of fuel down the carb and doesn't tick over very well. This could be something to do witht the MOT man fiddling about with the carb I wish he just left it alone but he was only trying to help.

 

So, new problem, fuel dripping down through the carb, and ticks over very badly

it really does sound like over fueling du to float level and or the needle valve not sealing properly. gotta be a worth a look.
