72mk1escort Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 My car now tops out at guess what off the clock i think it was doing around 115-120mph it was doing 5800RPM but i only have a 110mph speedo. Thats with the 1300 crossflow engine, twin weber carb, ashley 4 branch and 2" single box system and what i think might be a mk2 1600 box or possibly and mk1 1300 one. This was of course on private land So i guess it was a good thing the 1100 gearbox went i seem to have done quite well out of it really
JAY PS Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Think your speedo may be out ,cant see how it would do that Sorry but the gearing has more to do with top end !
Fishtailparka Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 You would need a 3.09 diff (in an Atlas) at those revs to do 120. Borrow a sat nav and try again (on a private road ) and see what it says.
razersedge Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 the 1100 and 1300 and 1600 boxes for the crossflow are the same ratio apparently the 1600 sport box is stronger, dont no if this is true or not, but you speedo is 36 years old it might be slightly out i would say 95mph is more like it if it has the original diff, my mate was bombing along at 125mph in his rs2000 and i flew past him like he was standing still at 110mph on a sat nav on a disused airstrip of course the diff your car has should be a 4.1 i think (early mk1 1100) if you whant more top end then put a 3.9(1300/1600 or late 1100) or a 3.7 (sport mexico or 1600ghia manual)or a 3.54 (rs2000 or 1600ghia auto) but the lower the number the slower the acceleration is
fergus mk2 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 old speedo's really arent that accurate i didnt tell my friends that
72mk1escort Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 Ive got a 3.7 diff and i think the gearbox is from a 1600 as it does about 55mph in second gear
V6MAT Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 i dont think that its right anyway a 1600e cortina will do about 98 mph
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 my cortina does about 110 115 according to my speedo but its out because when i cross the 1/4 mile its reading 83 84 but only doing 78 79 according to my time ticket so i think your speedo is out if your getting those figures sorry to put a downer on it
bortaf Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 assuming you have 185/60's on it you top speed was actually 101 as stated speedo is well out look here http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html and here http://www.free-online-calculator.com/r ... ator.shtml What's happend is the 1600 box has a different ratio of speedo drive (cos the 1.6 uses a different diff ratio) and thats knocked the 1100 speedo out
bronze4door Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 mine went off the clocks but was only doin about 95 max in a standard 1300 the clocks say 110 so get a sat nav and try again with my friends sat nav 70 mph was at 85 on my speedo
antz Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 mine stops at 103mph dead on at 6000rpm with a 3.89 diff and 185/60 tyres. i think your speedo is wrong matey
Rick Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 i have the same prob dude but mine undereads on everything i was doin 80mph at 2000 revs which in reality was about 90 at 5000 revs
geoffersmasher Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 christ mine was noisey and scary enough for me to stop at 101 (tomtom told me) on the motorway sorry private land and not go further thats with a 1600 on 40's with a big ol 2 1/4 inch manifold an exhaust and a cam hmm wonder what i could reach, but im supposed to have a 4.1 so maybe not too much more top stuff on the speed though
72mk1escort Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 I do have the same diff as a mexico its a 3.7
5hane Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 mine went off the clocks but was only doin about 95 max in a standard 1300 the clocks say 110 so get a sat nav and try again with my friends sat nav 70 mph was at 85 on my speedo look on the bright side.. no speeding tickets for you

X-pack-Glyn Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 OK, we all know old speedos are miles out, my 2 litre cappa with original box and CWP showed a clock reading of 128 (on a track day), no rev counter fitted but it was propper howling, my arse cheeks were clenched and i was wiating for a rod to let go , on GPS was 114 mph. all speedoes generally over read, my T5 speedo over reads by about 10% and thats a new van.
DAZZA Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Come round Pete, ill follow you in my daily and check it out! Ive got good expectations with that little crosser!
