jamie k Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 not a word of a lie thought a was gonna need one today petrol pipe chaffed on manifold , terified is not the word lets just say the engine wasnt cold at the time
Retromotorsport Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 I've posted this many times over the years .... and probably will for years to come. reason for plumb in Senario 1 Your driving down the motorway and smell smoke.... then you see some smoke You try and get over to the hard shoulder... the BMW in the middle lane wont move.... more smoke You get intbetween 2 BMW's and then the trucker flashes you over to the hard shoulder. Smoke is billowing out now along with some flames you fling open the door and ......... BANG the door and your arm is taken halfway down the motorway on the front of an Artic. You start to panic, your cars on fire and you've lost an arm... You stuff a rag in the stump at shoulder and try to grab the handheld extinguisher.. it wont fecking shift... you look at the bonnet and see its going black... the stump hurts.. and the extinguisher final springs out... and promptly rolls under the seat. You grab it and then try to open the bonnet... its hard one handed.. you burn you hand but the bonnet is up... bollox your hairs now allight from the flash fire as you've just fed the underbonnet fire with loads of fresh air. you pull the pin out with your teeth.. cracking one in the process.. you squeeze the trigger and ... whoosh a big cloud of dust envolopes you... still its put your hair out. but its done bugger all to the fire that raging around your engine. As you sit down on the verge, thinking your head hurts where its burnt, your hand hurts where thats burnt and the bloody stump where your arm was hurts to... but not as much as watching your pride and joy burn to a cinder. And what does the first motorist who stops say ..................... " are you allright?" Senario 2 Your driving down the motorway and smell smoke.... then you see some smoke You reach down and pull the 'T' handle of your plumb in extinguisher and see steam coming out of the bonnet ... your trousers are covered in foam too... you pull over to the shoulder and as you wait for the AA on the hard shoulder, you see a big black scar on the tarmac.. right next to where your soggy but otherwise ok car is, with bits of glass around it.. black glass .. and tyre wires Just think about those two stories for a moment... which one do you want to be in ? Fire extinguisher are something i dont take lightly... and if i see a hand held strapped to a rollcage i will remove it and throw it in the bin. HAnd helds are useless.. compared to plumb in's and one being attached to the rollcage is like putting a gun to your head ... at 30mph a 1.5Lb extinguisher can be as much as 150LB ,, and thats a big block V8 heading towards your head. strapping a handheld to the rear stays of a cage dosnt make your car look like a "racecar" it makes you look an idiot. Plumbed in 2 1/4 extinguisher are around £130 .... work it out... you would pay that for a refurb on your Rs4 spokes.... nice shiney wheel sitting under a burnt wreck........................ Lecture over and if that offends anyone then tuff luck.. its not only your life but the cars life and sorry but the cars more important, you can get away from the car... Now go place your orders with PLR RD etc
4 door escort Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 have to say that any fire extinguisher is better than none, i had mine go up on the A3 just passed Guilford, someone in the other lane was pointing and shouting at me, just as i was about to say "yeah f*ck you too" i heard them say "fire" needless to say, i couldn't give a rats ass if there was no where to pull over or if there was a bmw in the way, on went the anchors and i jumped out, the only damage was the HT leads, dizzy cap and some other minor cables that were easy to replace....the hand held extinguisher that lives on my transmission tunnel did the job just fine
hotrodholty Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 a mate of mine used to store his scooby rally car in our old unit, one day we had to move it to get another car out, being a smart arse i said to my dad, "it's alright, ill move it, iv seen him start that thing up a million times" secretly thinking ill give it a little blast round the yard. so i grabs the spare keys, goes to the car, jumps in, keys in the ignition, flick all the auxhiollary switch, turn the anti-lag on, and flick the electric cut off, or what i thought was the electrical cut off, pssshhhhhhhhh!, what the fook?. i look down and my legs are getting engulfed with white foam, i look up and through the multiple vents in the bonnet out comes more white foam. if your going to plum in a fire extinguisher please make sure you label it properly because sooner or later some dick head will set it off and they aint cheap to re-fill needless to say i never tried to drive the car again

Imagine the crims getting engulfed in foam!
MightySprocket Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 I am going to have a plummed in one if they are only £130, are they relatively easy to fit? do you get a discount on insurance
MightySprocket Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 wowsers! £75 http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_in ... ucts_id=45
mk3tina Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 as soon as i can get the cash together, ill be getting that £75 one from raldes, when your in the situation of having to pull over somehow and then pop the bonnet, get out, lift the red hot bonnet, prop the bonnet up, and pull the pin and fire the extinguisher. it makes much more sense to just pull a handle inside the car and save much more than £75 worth of heartache and parts
Retromotorsport Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Mighty.. as replied to in the PM .. thats the minimim requirement one for motorsport at the moment, but soon the rules will be a 4 litre dual chamber one as the minimum, so they are probably selling them off cheap to get rid of stocks .. grab one while you can
accord83 Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Our local car club had a talk from an international scrutineer last year, he mentioned one works team got asked to leave one rally in the 70's/ 80's (I forget which). A marshall noticed they changed the bottle on the plumbed in system every service. NOX anyone? They had no other extinguishers on board, Oooh those naughty Italians. John
