JAY PS Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Had a letter today from DVLA saying that illegal plates and spacing will be outlawed by 1st November 2008 with those caught having to pay £2,500 fine and loosing their select number also this applies to people who have bought non BS Standard plates from shows or internet as well . The Mot will include the check for BS plates when testing. Please note the Surrey /Hampshire police are cracking down on this already and i know two people stopped in last ten days that had black and silver plates on a modern car £60 fine and 3 points each ! Frenchy beware!!!!!
awesome Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 i know two people stopped in last ten days that had black and silver plates on a modern car £60 fine and 3 points each !Frenchy beware!!!!! Good it pisses me off seeing modern cars with black number plates just because they think black plate look cool
aled Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Totally agree....people making names etc out of plates. Get a grip !
Ken B Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Not before time too. Glad they are takin these steps rather than banning b/w plates outright which could have been the other outcome.
over_head_cam Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I reckon it's good that there may be a hefty fine. It's good that it's motorists that are being targeted again as most will have all their details in order so when they put a foot ever so slightly out of line they are pounced on But I think the powers that be should use that money to search out and neutralise the killers, rapists and scumbags that really are a threat to the rest of us. Personally I think altering plates is totally chavvy, but having Black and silver plates is hardly the crime of the century is it? Thank you for your time
Rick Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i take it the old pre 73's are still allowed black plates?
over_head_cam Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i take it the old pre 73's are still allowed black plates? Yes m8. As far as I'm aware

lotusless Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 does this mean they are gonna stop all the rich fookers round my way with their brand new range rovers? or just chavs? i think i know the answer................ NO!
H.P.E harry Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Thats a shame, i dont really want to take mine off
5hane Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 what about square numberplates ?? are these still fine ?
5hane Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 also i know many mk2 escort owners / capri mk3 owners ect. who have them.. dont police turn a blind eye to old skool cars a bit more than mordern tack ?
Fishtailparka Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 So all those plates that DVLA sold to people because they very nearly looked like a name or something are now being targeted as illegal (unless spaced correctly). Punishable by a £2500 fine and confiscation of the plate/reg. That was a cunning plan wasn't it.
countrybumpkin Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i think its a good idea actualy targating somthing illegal but i'm woundering were i would stand as i have black number plates on my 69 escort but they were made as show plates and carry no BS mark as they were made with the old style lettering will i have to change them?
hotrodholty Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Thats a shame, i dont really want to take mine off iv got black and silver pressed ally plates on mine mate, its a 75, iv been pulled by the coppers for speeding and they did'nt mention the plates, just a brake light that i had out and wether it was a real mex or not do the coppers really have nothing better to do with there time, what a jokeid rather them be out on foot sorting out all the little bastards on the streets than nicking people for having a wrongly spaced letter on my plate
bortaf Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 It's nothing new, people have ben pulled for illeagal plates for decades it's just what with all the plate regognition camers now the plate needs to be correct to be read properly, can't see whats wronge with that it's not like it's a new thing only the punishment has changed, we all know the law, break it get done how simple does it have to be before people stop breaking the law? If you get away with it fine but for gods sake stop moaning when you get caught doing something you knew was illeagal Put it this way if your car gets hit and the driver does the off and the police cant trace the cars movment cos he had illeagal plates the camera can't read you'd soon be moaning about it, wouldn't you
FredTransit Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 You are right about the ANPR bortaf, the black and silver are not programmed into them and have to be read manually, which is why they are clamping down, IMHO it's not to catch criminals leaving the crime scene, but to make sure they catch people going at 32 MPH in a 30 zone, it's just billed as making the world a safer place, catching the baddies ect. As far as being stopped by the police, I don't think that most coppers know when the cut off is, and the OSFs could get away with it. That having said, we don't have black and silver on anything that shouldn't have, but they are all off the internet and have no maker's name on them. They still go through the MOT fine.
Seldon Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 If they are illegal then fair enough, but I would guess that the average person who is proud enough of their Old Skool motor (whether it's a Ford or not) to put some show plates on it has got Tax MOT etc, or am I being naive. What they need to clamp down on is all these people running round with no insurance or buying a car with a bit of tax on it & not changing the log book & driving it around til the tax runs out. Oh & people driving plastic surely thats illegal. OK rant over
over_head_cam Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i think its a good idea actualy targating somthing illegal but i'm woundering were i would stand as i have black number plates on my 69 escort but they were made as show plates and carry no BS mark as they were made with the old style lettering will i have to change them? I would guess that they would be fine as they were not required as BS approved in all the life of the car so far. If you had original plates on a car of more than a few years old they wouldn't be BS anyway
Ken B Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 So reading all the above comments, its ok to break some laws and not others then, did I get that right? This has been brewing for a number of years now, with DVLA threating on more than one occasion to do away with b/w plates due to abuse of the system. They have now made a decision, those that are entitled to wear them can do. Those that are not entitled to wear them have to comply with the regs that go with white and yellow plates cant see that it can be any simpler.
over_head_cam Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I defy anyone to be 100% law abiding, even breaking the law by accident is breaking the law. What about all the tiny little by-laws etc. we are not aware of? Ignorance is no excuse as they say. My understanding of this thread is that most people here feel that the fine (Punishment) far exceeds the severity of the 'crime' You can get a warning for many crimes to the person, but it seems that if you have the means to own a vehicle, then you have the means to be robbed.
caprinerd Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i take it the old pre 73's are still allowed black plates? as long as they were a standard fitment then there legal
razersedge Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 i think points for something klie that is wrong. But it will also mean that sticker number plates are illegal too but does the old trick still stand of pre 73 plate on a newer car can have black and silver
FredTransit Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 So reading all the above comments, its ok to break some laws and not others then, did I get that right? No, don't know about anybody else, that's not what I am saying, thought I do agree that this is just another way of getting money off the motorist. TBH I doubt that some scrote driving a 10 year old bit of plastic would bother making the plates hard to read, just to get away with having no insurance. they just bale or let the police take it cos it's worthless anyway.
