Grey Crayford Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Asked this question recently on another forum, got a good response from them, so thought I'd ask for your opinions.............. Whats your views on modifying a mk2 cortina crayford convertible?? Just want to see what you think before I put up some photos & spec of the car I'm working on at the moment.
timmy4doors Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 good idea would be a bit different instead of the same old same old go for it
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Personally I wouldn't hesitate in modifying a car that I've brought back from the grave and put in loads of hours welding repairing, no matter how rare. If I'd just bought an unmolested, unrestored or low milesage example, I would want to keep it as standard as possible. But, at the end of the day it's your car so you can do what you want with it provided it stays on the road.
evil knievel Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 i'd be interested to see what mods you had in mind! sounds interesting, im all for it
mk2dk Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 My opinion : Basicly it's your car and you can do whatever you like. Because it's a very rare car I myself would treat it with a lot of respect, meaning everything that's "bolt-on" is no problem, but I would never arch it - 4 link it, or in other ways modify something that can't be made back to original again. May sound a little old-fashioned, but that my opinion
antz Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 its your car. do what you want. where are the pics of this crayford? my dad had one but sold it back in 1992. it was on ebay last year andfound out it is one of two 1600 autos known to the crayford owners club gutted

escort21 Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Slam it, add coilovers and sprinkle with a lairy xflow
V8ian Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Slam it, add coilovers and sprinkle with a lairy xflow I think he intends to follow a different route,
garyv6100e Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 I would keep the body and interior standard but mod the engine / transmission / suspension / brakes etc
Grey Crayford Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 Thanks for your opinions guys. As Ian has already said, not going with a crossflow.... I've been playing with my '69 crayford for quite some time now, when I bought it back in 1995 it was a basket case, damaged at the front, nearside & at the rear, left in the previous owners garden for a few years, then put in a council lock up where some of the local kids broke in & set it on fire. The owner then hand painted what was left in a few gallons of primer (everything was smothered, including the glass!!) & left it for a few more years. That was the condition I got it in, not exactly minty fresh!! The first build up consisted of a ex RS2000 pinto & 5 speed box, rack conversion, capri 2.8 front legs, godspeed discs with princess calipers, lotus back axle, 7x15 compomotive ML's & a repaint in ford royal blue. Used it for a couple of years like this, then took it off the road while I had a play with a couple of capri's & a granada cos. Started back on it early in 2002, originally going to redo the suspension, fresh paint etc.......... Got a bit carried away since though, the spec so far includes: Leda 21/4 escort front legs with billet eccentric top mounts, rose jointed bottom arms, alloy hubs, Wilwood super light callipers with 310mm rotors, Retroford narrowed atlas axle, 2.8 decambered single leaves, polybushed throughout, seam welded shell, raised floors with subframe connectors, custom multipoint cage, steel rear firewall, recessed font bulkhead, plumbed in fire extinguiser system, split rims, autometer gauges, msd ignition, custom alloy rad, fuel tank etc & 4.6l rangerover/TVR nitrous injected V8 & TVR T5 box.......... will put some photos up as soon as I can.
caprinerd Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 sounds awsome m8 get those pics up
walsh253 Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 the anoraks will always moan if you change things, but hey, balls to them its your car, your money.
caprinerd Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 they winge if you aint got genuin ford parts . do it your way m8 let them winge seriously cant see the fun of going to a show and spending all your time under a car polishing the exhaust
Grey Crayford Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 Thanks for the positive response about this guys, weren't too sure if you'd be in favour of some one messing with a relatively rare car. The car was in a very bad condition when I first got it, brought it back from the dead!! Will definately put some photos up of the project as soon as I can, thanks again.
