was in maplins the other day and came out with a thatcham 2 transponder immobliser. good piece of kit, really good and easy to fit. £14.99 bargain + certificate off the net

The trouble with immobilisers on most of our cars is that there aren't enough things to immobilise and because the wiring looms on them are fairly simple and limited, the immobiliser wiring stands out like a sore thumb making it very easy to circumvent.

 

Mk3 Capris are probably a little easier to hide them on than say mk1 / 2 escorts and Cortinas etc.

1 wire to the door light switch

 

1 switched wire

 

1 earth wire

 

Cut the starter wire (red white) and 2 wires to either side

 

Cut the coil +ve wire and 2 wires to each side of that

 

If you have a fuel pump cut the +ve wire and 2 to each side of that

 

its in a metal box, so hide that, tape the loom up. put the antenna at the back of the key barrel.

Not sure about the Cert off the net you mention, but be aware that insurance companies will only accept if this have been fitted by a pro, they will not pay out if the car is stolen and unit not correctly installed and they will check installer details etc.

what id say if you are going to fit some thing like this don't just cut the wire's in the steering column and join them up open the loom and move the cables as far away as possible and mount it where there is more space and tape the loom up afterward's to make it harder and remember at heart it's just an elaborate relay that makes and breaks so any circit that can stop the car running will be a hinderence to them

thought about this one myself but the crims that want our cars are not oportunists they are set up to steal them. The only person this would stop from starting the car would be yourself when it packs up

easy to install = easy to remove. think, any crooks what have bought this, they now have the instruction manual to install/remove it!

 

i'd just get a King hardcore one fitted by a specialist. helps with the insurance too obviously it is harder on old cars but we all make sacrifices

Instalation is 90% of an alarm/immob install, weither it's a cheap one or not

I've had plenty of cars broken into and only 1 stolen and they had to tow that away, all it had was my usuall 2 inline switches to the pump or ign BUT they were instaled well, the only issue with this is wether it will last and/or get you cheaper ins, you can't blame a beaten immobiliser for a poor instalation

go on ebay..... propper toad immobliser (sterling touchkey) is only 30quid....

and that immobalises TWO circuits, AND uses a electronic key to unlock!!!

 

i have mine fitted to the (fuel pump + ecu)

AND the starter motor but without taking the dashboard out and filing through a wiring loom half an inch thick for each of the switched wires, you aint gonna get it started!

 

cant even jump it nither, no spark!

 

and if you ask nicely i could kindly give you instructions on fitting the toad model as EVERY SINGLE wire coming out the back of it is BLACK!!!!

so a thief cant trace the wires to the wiring loom to get the car to start

your best saving your money and make your own if you own an old car theres only a handful of wires to use anyway, any competant thief would soon suss it out

All Thatcham Cat 1 & 2 systems have black wires that's part of the approval that's needed to make them insurance approved !!!!

 

If the Maplin ones do not have this then it's not approved by insurance companies, they also need have to have metal enclosure to ensure a magnet cannot be used to "trick" the internal relays all connections need to be soldered with colour Id tags cut off.

 

These are good but as said unless the insurance companies insist on it being fitted you can do the same with some relays or inline switches
