DAZZA Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I cant believe that places like British Heritage havent considered reproducing shells, say for example the most sortafter Mk1 Escort. Looking on the site its mostly stuff like BL and Triumph, so I wonder if it wouldnt consider Ford as it was an American based company? Surely the international interest in such a car for restoration and competition would warrant commercially viable production? (Especially the Irish and Welsh rally boys) I suppose it would affect smaller companies producing pattern parts and panels and that would be a bad thing, even maybe even pull valuation down, but in the cut throat world of business this would be a small consideration. Even Ford itself jumping on the bandwagon to meet restoration supplies? Anyone else ever pondered over this?
BIGKEV Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 isnt there a company in spain that will sell you a kit car mk1/2 escort including a new shell for a lot of money
evil knievel Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 i think ford are too much of a 'future' company. i cant even keep up with the new cars they are bringing out, let alone them reproducing old ones. i am afraid that the market is too small. There may be thousands of ford fans on this site, but there is millions of other people who wouldnt dream of owning a 'rust bucket' (as they call them) like us! just my two pence worth!
Rick Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 would cost millions to set that kind of business up you have to wonder how many people would actually want to pay 20 grand for a brand new old ford
caprinerd Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 stuball gave me a link to a site in ndia that you can buy a SD1 rover shell or even a do it your self shell where they supply the shell in flat pack form and you put it together, so why cant there do that with osf there`s enough of us out there more than the SD1 owners members
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I have thought about this before, as 2 of my mates have a Mini & Triumph Vitesse. The amount of parts they can buy brand new is astonishing... even new old stock parts for my Rover P6 are cheaper than Ford bits. The trouble is the tooling. British Heratige bought the old British Leyland tooling so producing panels and complete shells are no problem. Alot of Fords tooling was scrapped to make room for making new models... BL on the other hand kept the same design of car going for decades with only silly alterations; Take the Mini for example: 1959 - 2000.
NeilT Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 stuball gave me a link to a site in ndia that you can buy a SD1 rover shell or even a do it your self shell where they supply the shell in flat pack form and you put it together, so why cant there do that with osf there`s enough of us out there more than the SD1 owners members yep but theres a load of sd1's on the roads in india we sold them the pattens to make the cars them selfs that and the mistro lol i have always wondered why you can get body shells you can so so many other cars including things like 69 camaro's and mustangs and mins but no OSF's
DAZZA Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 Interesting points..... Im sure youve seen chop cut rebuild, where they are able to get a new camaro shell from Taiwan! ... Ebay it is then.
BIGKEV Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I know a company not very far from me who will have a Mk1 Escort Fibreglass shell preety soon ...... its not what you know its who......
Rick Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I know a company not very far from me who will have a Mk1 Escort Fibreglass shell preety soon ...... its not what you know its who...... not the whitspeed one though, i didnt think much of that one.
Ken B Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I'm not 100% cetain, but I'm sure I read that the tooling from the MK2 Transit went to China not long after Ford finished with it. No good to most of us I know but Fred Transit would be pleased!!! The only other marque I can think of right now that were sold on is the old square Hillman Hunter went to Iran but was fitted with a different engine. I think Ford may have been worried about other countries importing their old cars back into the country and under cutting on spares, which is perhaps why they never let much else be sold on.
hotrodholty Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I know a company not very far from me who will have a Mk1 Escort Fibreglass shell preety soon ...... its not what you know its who...... interesting, any links, pics or other info and what was the whitspeed one

Ken B Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I wouldn't mind betting also as Ford @ Dagenham had it own on site casting plant etc at the time, that the old tooling was cut up and possibly re-used in the making of components for the new cars on the production line. All adds the savings on materials so makes sense possibly.
bigglesmk2 Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 In all honesty i love mk2 escort's ,they are my favorite car. But i think making brand new mk1/2 escort shell's would be a bad idea
mk1super Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 In all honesty i love mk2 escort's ,they are my favorite car. But i think making brand new mk1/2 escort shell's would be a bad idea If they were available more easily and the spares too, it may cut down on the theft of em
bigdaz27 Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 british motor heritage who remake mini and mg shells have found and recommissioned the original press tools and jigs to remake the shells for anyone to remake mk1 and mk2 escort shells they would have to find the originals or remake them and as you can imagin you would need thousands of original or remade press dies the cost would be in the millions and thats a lot of shells to get that back so unless ford keept the dies and press tools witch i would have thought they would have been lost or irrevocably modified

mk1super Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 the escort press's were distroyed,AVO Averly is long gone and being redevloped We are doomed to fibreglass panels and badly fitting steel ones
MG-Ford Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 Being new to the Ford circle I have to admit its annoying, I am into both BL mainly MG and having BH there on hand making parts is excellent. TBH though I rather enjoy fabrication and because off the shelf parts are around for BL stuff it can make restorations rather Dull, Queue the Capri . I suppose this also stops the BL stuff being modded as you don't find much of it at all.
