pauln Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 More broken promises from Gordon Brown and cronies in Rip Off Britain Fuel duty is to go up by 2p a litre on April 1st, how come the national press aren't clamouring about it? http://www.petrolprices.com/blog/duty-r ... s-110.html Here we go again, while i'm not in favour of a fuel price rise I am more interested in the price of fuel vs the price of a barrel of oil. Current price of petrol about 91p a litre against a crude price of 45 dollars. The last time fuel was 91p crude was 70 dollars a barrel. While the £/$ exchange rate has swung in favour of the dollar it still shows oil company profiteering yet again.
Admin Vista Posted March 18, 2009 Author Admin Report Posted March 18, 2009 Oil company profiteering or not the majority of what we pay does not go to the oil company it goes to the treasury. How can you argue that it's right that over 70% of what we pay at the pumps goes direct to the treasury? Or that it's fair that we should pay a tax on a tax (VAT on fuel duty). Or that the duty is charged as a percentage of the cost of the fuel rather than at a flat rate. When the price of a barrel of oil sky rocketed, did the government offer to rebate any of the extra money they were coining in to help people that were stuggling? No they didn't, however in the speech at that link The right dishonourable PM promised to freeze the duty (generous of him......................not) for one year. A promise he has broken not once but twice!
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Like you said Vista it's the tax on tax that's the last straw. Bad enough the amount of fuel duty we pay. Thing is, much as I dislike it, there is not much we can do about it right now. The last fuel protests were a bit of a damp squib.

A promise he has broken not once but twice! Just out of interest what would you consider to be a fair fuel tax? Also what would you do about replacing fuel tax revenue. We do live in an expensive society and the only place it could go is income tax (and it's hardly fair for the non car owner to subsidise the car owner). It could be that without the fuel tax revenue we could sink even deeper into our part of the world recession. It's not just this government, the previous one did nothing to spare the motorist from fuel duty and neither will the next one.
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Well oddly France and Germany have lower fuel tax. Oh and I pay for the schools and education, but don't have a single child, nor do i intend to. There are limits to how much tax you want to pay.
BIGKEV Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 lets have a protest hell a revolt lets go and block off the M4/M25 - who's with me it will have to be a hot day though as I cant find my coat oh theres my coat

They do indeed, they also have better state funded health systems and better public transport systems. You don't have to paid any road tax in France either. As to what would we replace the tax with, I don't have all the answers. I'm neither a politician nor an accountant but I do know that other countries manage it without the excessive taxation levels on fuel that we suffer so where's all the money going? Thing is, much as I dislike it, there is not much we can do about it right now. The last fuel protests were a bit of a damp squib. At the crucial time the voter is more powerful than any government or minister. Vote for change.

I dont see the money rasied from fuel tax being plowed back into making the roads better. Its more like the car owner is being used to subsidise the government, and I know they need to get income somehow but it just seems like everytime the crap hits then fan they push up the tax and shake a little more out of us as we are the easy targets and they can hit us over the head with the "enviroment" arguement.

Oh that's right, I forgot it's not up to me when I vote. No way are the government gonna call an election right now, they are about as popular as a chocolate fire guard.
Fishtailparka Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 They should turn off the street lights. My car has got headlights and I don't really need streetlights. I doubt any other country lights up all the motorways for no apparent reason, for mile upon mile. There are bugger all cars on the road in the early hours anyway. I have friends from abroad over here and they all comment about it being a crazy waste of electric. Environmentally friendly thing to do too.

I was just pointing out that tax revenue has to be raised (you can't just let the recession run it's course which is the Tory option). We motorists do get a (small) part of the fuel tax put back into our road system so if fuel tax was cut and income tax increased the cost of the road system would spread to all tax payers rather than just the motorist. I wonder if the government would have more control over the crude based price of fuel if they still owned an oil company?
