Muttley MK2 Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 May have been done before but I would like to hear if you are new to old fords, or you have been around since they were"new" If you are new, what attracted you to old fords? If you are "older" what made you stick around these old rust buckets?
lee_capri Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 mate i have been around since the mk3 capri was new and yes i had one when they were new me first car was a 3l s capri car's used to be ten pence to a pound mate i have had complete and running rs2000 custom's for has littke has £50 and 2.8i capri's for the same money even with test on them back in the day
pauln Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 Had my Cortina for about 5 years. I bought it as a change from Morris Minors and being a 1600e I thought I could restore it quick and sell it for a good profit. I did the first bit and it's stuck with me as a getting faster daily ever since.
Conor Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 Been around them a while. Currently, my Capri needs new valve stem seals, new engine mount rubbers, new clutch plate/bearing and the axle is noisy. By the time I've got them done, there'll be something else. Used to enjoy it and always having something to do on them but TBH, nowadays it's just getting a pain and I've about had enough. Sick of chasing rust, sick of chasing a never ending series of problems. Mine was resprayed 18 months ago and rust is coming back through already. It's due road tax in 3 days and I'm finding it hard to bring myself to do it. Selling it and getting something a bit more modern is looking more attractive every passing week. Seriously been thinking about getting a 2L Twin Cam Sierra Sapphire. I'll still be looking at something the thick end of 20 years old but in motoring terms, it's modern enough not to suffer rapid rusting or the never ending mechanical gremlins. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, my back is shot and my money could be done with going elsewhere. I've spent well over £10,000 on them in the last 6-7 years and when I sell this, I'll be lucky to get £1500. I know it's not about the money but about the crack however the opportunities to go out for a blast in it are getting fewer and I seem to get just as much enjoyment nowadays going for a blast down the local B roads in my MK3 Mondeo TDCi 130 as I do in the Capri, mainly down to the fact I've not got a rear axle droning in my ears, a sunroof that rattles occasionally or get juddering when I set off. I've been out to Scotch Corner at the end of March. I've been for a blat out a couple of times since then. It's seriously looking like the next time it'll go anywhere will be to CF if I still own it. Maybe it's because where I live absolutely nothing goes on in the classic Ford scene that doesn't involve a 300 mile round trip. Hell, even the nearest Capri club to me is a 150 mile round trip. Certainly, the wife seems to have more go on with her Mitsi FTO club which doesn't involve going 100's of miles. But with nowt to do and nowhere to go, having it to go to just a handful of events a year is looking pretty pointless from here. Sorry for the rant.
Muttley MK2 Posted April 26, 2009 Author Report Posted April 26, 2009 I know what you mean Conor, my daily drive apart from the tranny is a DOHC mk3 Granada, still 16 years old but modern enough not to be a total pain in the a$%e
Savvi Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 Bought my 1st Mk1 Escort at 12 .................which makes it now 30 years ago. Had all models of Mk1 Escort except a Lotus twin cam, plus most of the others: 100E's Anglias Cortinas Mk1 , 2 , 3 and 5 's Capris 1, 2 & 3 P100 Crotina style and loads in between !!!! So i'm guessing i'm now a Fordaholic and should be attending weekly meetings ......... although i'm on here daily so that's close !!!!

garyv6100e Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 I grew up with fords my dad was a driving instructor "pete's school of motoring" based in Sutton some of you my know of him and he always had escorts and he always bought fords for my mum MK4 Zodiac MK3 Cortina GT MK1 Granada so when i passed my driving test in 1985 it was escort's & capri's for a few years but in the early 90's i got a job with a company car so had been in plastic for quite a while as there was no OSF scene circa 1993 but as soon as family commitments etc allowed i got my OSF last year and i am enjoying every minute of it
jamesg Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Ive got to say "new blood" ive wanted a mk3 Capri since i was about 10, tried to buy one at 17 but could'nt afford the insurance, tried again at 21 but still silly money. Final at 25 i could afford one. So ive had my Capri for just over 3 years now and it the best thing ive bought.
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 i stuck with old fords because it was all could afford at one time but now i got to look after my cortina because prices are going up and old fords arnt cheap anymore but of corse i love them too would never want to be without a old ford
Conor Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 but of corse i love them too would never want to be without a old ford As much as I've ranted on about mine, I know what you mean. THere's always something strange about the back of my house without a Capri parked there when I'm inbetween cars or they've been in the bodyshop for a few weeks.
BIGKEV Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Passed my test and could only afford £250 for a car - could only afford the Escort Mk2 - why oh why didnt I buy that Mk1 Golf lol Been with them since - will have them forever as I cant get over the driving experience from an Escort!!
bigglesmk2 Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 I was born in 82,and my dad was allways picking up cheap or free car's and most of the time it would have been a Ford When i started doing driving lessons my dad got given a 1976 mini,i got the choice of that or my brothers mk2 escort (which had been sitting under a tree for afew years). I had allways wanted a mk3 cappa and at the time a mk2 escort was a close as i was gonna get...... i still got the same mk2 tucked away
richie_stix Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 was born in 86... so the last year of capri... so i would deam myself new blood! always loved american muscle, and when i saw a capri i knew i had to have one! in school i really wanted a pug 206... i would go through my max power and dream all the gash mods i would do... go through demon tweeks and think of all the pointless interior shite i would like!
Retro-gone. Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 in 1973 a neighbour bought a brand new daytona yellow 2000gxl mk3 cortina, i was totally gobsmacked with it, from that day on i wanted one, at 13 my dad bught me a red mk1 capri to tinker with but it never saw the road again. at 17 i passed my car test and after killing a vauxhall viva i bought a black 1969 mk1 capri GT1600. my dad owned a taxi company and all he used were mk2 and mk3 cortinas, my bro had a modified anglia and a mk3 cortina, so i grew up with fords and to date ive owned approx 15 cortinas and capris.. i had a spell on 70s toyotas and datsuns but always came back to fords
bronze4door Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 i am only 21 but had my mk1 since i was 17 and dont plan on ever getting rid of it i wanted something different to drive around in for my first car and ended up with the escort after seeing a few at shows and my friend having one
lazy Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 i've owned fords since i started driving mostly fiesta's. did have a stint of celica supras owned two but due to hard to come by and expensive parts i've gone back to fords
D-FENS Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 i was born way back in 1961,such a different world then.I had all my driving lessons and tests x2 in a mk2 escort. When i passed my test my dad gave me his mk2 cortina deluxe 69 G reg and i loved that car.Had a number of non fords as daily drivers and got back into old fords about 7-8 years ago.Owned 3 1600Es,one mk2 escort GL auto and now have a mk2 cortina 1300 deluxe fitted with a V6 essex running on lotus steels.I have very limited knowledge of working on cars ,so all jobs are a big challenge for me.I regularly think about getting out of owning an old car but then after going for a good blast in the mk2,i change my mind.
Retromotorsport Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 when i was under 10 spent most of my school holidays in a Ford Transcontinental, at the same time at school, i was bugging my teacher about his 'original' south london look 105E, this was in Colchester, slammed to the ground, 4 pipes out of a sectioned sill from the screaming x-flow. deep burgandy with a silver roof, wide cream steels with hubcaps .... and it was linked!!!!! this thing used to make mincemeat of all the jacked up V8 Zod's and Zeph's 4 years later was designing cars and working out suspension geometries .. 1 year on, first escort, modded to what i'd read and studied and driven by friends dads and older brothers, 17 and college and i was driving what i'd built ... and still designing and refining to this day.
