Rick Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 mk mk1 escort has been in the shed a good year now iv never actually compared the size of it to another car. it looks huge inside ... so i did turns out its nearly a foot shorter than my old nissan and a lot shorter/height wise now my micra was like shit off a shovel and that was a mildly tweeked 950cc LOL so surely a 1600 xflow is gonna be fast in such a small shell makes me wonder why most feel they have to go for pintos and bigger?? surely thats overkill and upsetting the balance of the car and cosworths.... thats basically turning it into a supercar
MightySprocket Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 my standardish GT crossflow puts out 90bhp and is nippy... but not quick by modern standards
Rick Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 are you comparing to modern engines of the same size? unless your talking 15k plus new cars id say theyre pretty dire
MightySprocket Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 A 1300 corsa would kick its arse
Pipster007 Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 and cosworths.... thats basically turning it into a supercar But isn't it great being able to p**s off new supercar owners in a 20, 30, 40 or even 50 y/o car. I saw it the other night when Tony (Petrolhead01) upset a Scooby WRX owner in his 1958ish Ford Pop
Admin Vista Posted December 18, 2006 Admin Report Posted December 18, 2006 and cosworths.... thats basically turning it into a supercar But isn't it great being able to p**s off new supercar owners in a 20, 30, 40 or even 50 y/o car. I saw it the other night when Tony (Petrolhead01) upset a Scooby WRX owner in his 1958ish Ford Pop Oh yes it makes me grin every time. My pinto is nothing like a Cosworth, but was putting out a fairly reasonable 145bhp at the rear wheels on the RR last summer and that is enough to give many modern "fast" cars a fright. Remembering that most of them these days are heavily laden with airbags, central locking, electric bum wiper and loads of other uneccessary & heavy gadgets. I had a little run in with a fairly new shiny 325i BMW on the way back from a show last year laughed my socks off when he gave up pretending he wasn't that interested after all. Truth is he'd have had me if he'd kept it up as he could have driven quite comfortably at those sorts of speeds for ages, whereas I felt like I was doing about Mach 3 and was very concious of my cars 30 year old design (safety what's that?). worth it all for the look on their faces when you take off like a scalded cat though
over_head_cam Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 My old 1300 is slow by anyones standards. But I allway say it's not WHAT, but HOW
Rick Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 A 1300 corsa would kick its arse i have a 1.2 corsa its pants and just heavy

Mark2Mark Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 If you are compairing old engines to new then obviously the newer stuff is going to kick the older stuffs a$$, my anglia is running a 1660x/flow and it's plenty quick enough but compare it to a newer 1600 engine and it is no where near, but then speed is all relative 50mph in my noisy old anlebox feels like 100mph in a newer car so you don't really need loads of power (although it is nice) Also the pinto was in the escorts originaly so it is not really upseting the balence of the car, and the zetec for eg. is lighter than a pinto

Ticks over at the legal limit and will rev through to 8500 rpm. 0-60 in less than 2. Frightened a few 'fast' cars......
bomber1 Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 i read some where that it would take an old style 3ltr+ car to keep up with a modern 2ltr it depends on what u want from the car. i had the 16x-flow not the quickest but no slouch either also depends on how u drive lets face it most things are quick if u have a lead right foot
Fiesta Steve Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 Power to weight ratio Half the power but half the weight, so making them about equal. But turbo has more lag than a plumb centre. (any excuse to post that picture ) Placeborick, give that x-flow a few tweaks and you'll leave most modern $hit for dust !
Gareth Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 ...i read some where that it would take an old style 3ltr+ car to keep up with a modern 2ltr.... Modern engines are more refined-overhead cams, multi valve heads, fuel injection and lighter thanks to alloy blocks.... 90% of old skool cars were RWD where as 90% of modern cars are FWD so there are greater transmission losses. The old 1300 I originally had in my Escy used to power it along quite nicely.... Certainly surprised me a few times along with modern drivers I read somewhere the kerbside weight of a Mk1 Escy was about 804kg (Correct me if I'm wrong ), so compare that to a modern car that weighs about 1300kg and you've got one helluva power to weight advantage

Re the 2nd statement you've only got a power to weight ratio advantage if you've got similar power output as your opponent. if the difference is too high he'll still have you.

Rick Posted December 19, 2006 Author Report Posted December 19, 2006 responding to als post: whos gonna look down on your car mate... come on its awesome be sure to leave that ferari standing
Dom Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 There's nothing much more satisfying than blowing away modern rubbish with your OSF! So even though it's got a more modern engine (an extra 60ish bhp) the capri hasn't been beaten . Latest victim was a Galant
quickrack Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 I liked driving past all the kathunk kathunk and spoilers boys, in a ratty old MK1 and having EVERYBODY turn to look. P*ssed them off no end and it started life as an 1100 but everyone assumes its like a rally car
