internet seems slow this evning so i guess half the world is watching online......how sad

Why is that sad. He's the biggest international star in the history of the planet.....

Cue the cynics :roll::(

No it isn't sad to be watching but oh please, the biggest international star on what planet and in who's opinion?

Sure he made some good music but not as much as people make out. In a 30+ year career as a solo artist he managed just seven albums, not all of which were good and one of which was partly a compliation of past hits.

Good artist, yes. But best international star? Not a chance.

Have to call your bluff there Scott, name me someone as big worldwide as Jackson then?

Errrrr helloooo Madonna?

And what's more, the sycophants on that program claimed he was the best international star EVER.

so to counter that one too: Elvis, Sinatra.

And if we can include bands as well as artists, The Beatles, U2 to name just two

chuck Queen and Led Zep onto the bands list

And if we can remove our blinkers for a minute and go beyond the English speaking world, we will will find that many of these acts just simply aren't recognised to the same extent that MJ is.....

See, what I said was MJ was the biggest (can be measured in album sales, how many countries to can go to and see if people recognise the name/music, etc.) international star ever. I did not say he was the best (purely subjective, down to the individual, we'll be here for ever debating that sort of thing).

As for all the acts that have been named above......Nice try, but the Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain and Andrew Lloyd Webber all have higher selling albums than the highest sellers of those named above.

And if you're going to insist on confusing biggest with best, then you've just saying that you think Backstreet Boys are better than Led Zep, which might make you a little bit :queer::lol:

I like to think Elvis has finally died and MJ now has to water his plants

:think::?:

i have to agree, michael jackson went to countries nobody even cares about going to, he is recognised worldwide and is def one of the biggest international stars not to mention hes a total icon for his individual style with clothes, music and video's which are recognised everywhere.

and i like the backstreet boys :oops::oops:

Just re-read your post. Which technically means that you're only repeating what was said by others and these are not your own words.....

Sycophant might be a bit strong for the likes of Berry Gordy and Stevie Wonder, and anyone else who could be counted amongst MJ's friends/contempories. And if they do get a bit gushy at his memorial, so what? They're talking to a room and TV audience full of fans.

I would like to think that at my memorial, a few sycopha.....I mean, friends might get a bit gushy and start to call me the best yada yada, blah blah. That's surely what a memorial service is about??

Actually, they're likely to say I was the "biggest" yada yada, blah blah - Cheeky bastards that they are :D

I was talking about the biggest international star who was still alive, so that rules out Elvis and The Beatles, who IMO are in the same league as MJ, however Madonna is not in the same recognisable league as MJ. Queen, U2 and Led Zep are further down the league then Madge. I think that if you went to the back of beyond with a picture of those artists, then more people would know who MJ is more then those other artists. THAT is what made MJ the BIGGEST star on this planet.

Sorry guys, but I don't see it. Sure he made some good music, but the best international star ever? (which was what was said on the program) no way.

As with all statistics, you can interpret them any way you want. Here's my interpretation: Thriller was a massive success, one that he hasn't been able to match since ergo his career has been on a downhill slope since 1982.

As to the claim that he's more recognised globally than anyone else, I don't go with that either. How do you know? Have you traveled to all of these places to see or ask for your self? Having travelled quite extensively, I'd wager that David Beckham would be more recognised in most African nations and the Queen globally. So now do you want to narrow it down to just international music stars?

I hate to break bad news to you mate but it rules out Michael Jackson too

Actually, having checked back. It was "greatest". A word with so many definitions, it's hard to argue either way.

Album sales are a count, not subject to statistical analysis. Bad and Dangerous also sold 30 mil each. Incidentally, more copies than "True Blue", Madonna's best seller...So often the case that an artist's earlier work is better selling than their later stuff. Is that 'cos they go off the boil, or cos' they've had longer to sell. Discuss........

I'd wager that David Beckham would be more recognised in most African nations.

Guess we'll have to wait 'til he keels over and see how many tune in for the memorial?

Given that we're talking about the death of a music star I would have thought that is the context in which this debate is meant to be taken. I mean what next.....Let's measure him up against Buddha, Mohammed and Jesus.

I guess we'll have to agree to differ on this one.

You think he was the greatest (or best or biggest howsoever it's worded)international star ever

and I think he wasn't. My opinion is that he was Wacko Jacko, made a great album 27 years ago and hasn't produced much good stuff since. If anything he became better known in the last 15 years or so for his wacko antics and ill advised nocturnal habits that got him into so much deep shit. Oh and to those who argue that he was found innocent, yes I accept that but I still wouldn't have left my kids with him............................would you?

Whichever argument you believe I hope he rests in peace as he certainly didn't get much in his lifetime.

I don't have kids, but if I did I agree there would be no way I would have left them at an unsupervised sleep-over with ANY random man in their 40's, let alone Michael Jackson, therefore the parents are more to blame in my opinion.

However, if I was an extremely greedy parent and could smell $20,000,000 compensation money, I'd probably send my child to Michael in a catholic school girls uniform, hire the best solicitor I can find and wait for the court case!

ok the greatest star ever.... sorry but no

Mozart wrote over 600 pieces between his birth in 1756 and 1791. In 200 years will people be listening to Michael Jackson and saying the greatest star ever. And its not just Mozart people are still listening to Vivaldi,Beethoven,Bach etc etc etc and some of the pieces they wrote over 300 years ago. Pop music popularity is a drop in the ocean in comparison to their musical genius. And when you think what hes famous for. maybe 10 3 minute songs. Some werent written by him. and dancing.

I like Jacko, but i wouldnt call him a musical genius.

I'm arguing for the biggest (because it's quantifiable) not the best or greatest, as they are qualitative and personal. Personally, I don't believe he was the best. That'll be Darius Danesh :D

Whichever argument you believe I hope he rests in peace as he certainly didn't get much in his lifetime.

Amen to that, Scott

Given the hundreds of years betwen them (ie. Global music video phenomonen wasn't around for Mozart to exploit, world population in 1750 was on 790 million (less than tuned in for the memorial)), it's mind-boggling even beginning to compare. I need a lie down.......

But that's the most convincing arguement, I've heard so far

Mozart's still no match for Darius Danesh though :(

That made me laugh! Sounding like a proper new york city girl there Vista!!:lol:

Yeah madonna is well known but i really dont think she is a patch on mj and im pretty sure alot of people would agree with me. As for bands there was talk of international star not international band. Dont get me wrong, i love a bit of sinatra but nothing gets people dancing and singing like one of michaels songs. Cue vista and anyone with a dislike to mj

Reading between the lines of this thread, it appears to me that

a) Michael Jackson has croaked

B) there are a lot of fans on here

c) people think MJ was bigger than Led Zep, Queen, Madonna, and Beethoven together

d) MJ is still dead

Right, I will tthrow my twopennorth in.

He was a brilliant artist, incredibly talented.

He is dead.

He was barking mad, but in the lifestyle he had gained for himself, i suppose that's acceptable.

i like Led Zeppelin to Patsy Cline, Vivaldi to OMD. Hell, I even like some MJ stuff.

But here's the question.

Does the assembled panel think that the whole MJ is brown bread thing has got out of hand, radio full of his stuff all day, TV full of coverage of him?

Are they gonna have 5, 10 year anniversary celebrations, just like Diana, and keep asking the same old questions over and over?

The bloke is dead FFS, let him rest
