FredTransit Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I decided to only use online email after having two computers die on me in quick succession and lost a lot of emails. So I switched to using my ISP's online email, Orange. It's pants. It can be unavailable for days, and currently it's off again, I have no idea for how long. These days I can't afford to miss a single email enquiry, so it's time for a change. Now our published (website, business cards) email is redirectable. so I am not worried about having to change my email anywhere. Has anybody got any suggestions for a decent online email? I have got a yahoo account, but find it a bit domestic. Despite it's 'spammer' following I was wondering about gmail. Any comments?
BIGKEV Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 You will not get better than a gmail - orgooglemail account - it is far better than anything else out there and all the extras like the calendar etc are the buisiness. Dont think about it any more - get it done now. You will thank me.
FredTransit Posted July 24, 2009 Author Report Posted July 24, 2009 I am looking at it now, the only thing that puts me off is the spmmer connection. If you have ever run a forum you will know that, if a spammer doesn't have a .ru address, it will be a gmail address! It's only the fact that there ARE legitimate users that stops me banning the domain altogether....
BIGKEV Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 dont really know hat you are on about there - Gmail/googlemail is the best there is - if a website wont let you on because you have a certain doamin name then it cant be a very good website?
Messenjah Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 kev fred is saying that alot or spammers / hackers use gmail or googlemail accounts ... and fred think about it spammers hackers etc using gmail they tend to be massive computer nerds and wouldn't be using it if it wasn't a good service ... in a way its a big endorsement.

No sorry you don't understand, I have two forums of my own so deal with about ten spammers a day (OK not a huge amount but still enough). If they don't come form Russia and have a .ru email address, 9 times out of 10 they have a gmail account. I am not sure why but other forum admin say the same. As I said, I know plenty of legitimate people use it as an email address, but a lot of spammers do too. In this case by spammers I mean people that will sign up to a forum and put useless spam posts up, not the ones that send out direct email, but users of gmail do that too. there is an anti spam site that lists known spammers, I use it to check if a new member is genuine or not, and it's amazing how many use gmail.

I see what you are saying, but if you got an unsolicited email from somebody on gmail would you take it seriously?
BIGKEV Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 ok - but you will never get rid of Spammers - this should not impact your decision against Gmail/googlemail. - as Andrew says it means that Gmail is preffered by a lot of Geeky freaky people http://mail.google.com/mail/help/about.html look at this and then think about it some more.
Admin Vista Posted July 24, 2009 Admin Report Posted July 24, 2009 I would go back to using outlook (if that was what you were using before?) you can download a patch from Microsoft that gives you the option to back up your email to an external disc or hard drive, I do this weekly and it's saved my bacon a few times
BIGKEV Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 why use your own space though Scott and can you access the email at any point in time from anywhere - at the bottom of the page for my inbox it shows me this You are currently using 871MB (11%) of your 7351MB I have had the account since MAR 2005 and have never been above 11% as the space you can save things keeps creeping up. I I get a shitload of emails too.
FredTransit Posted July 24, 2009 Author Report Posted July 24, 2009 That's why I don't want to go back to using email tied to any computer, specially if it dies and I can't get to them (I am bad about backing up). I am now being told my username and password don't match on Orange, yet I have changed nothing! This worries me, as exactly the same thing happened to me with Tiscali (for the whole internet access, not just email), yet they insisted they would look into it. I was down to going to internet shops, by the time they sorted it I was with wanadoo.
Savvi Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I have email storage via my webspace. I had all the problems you are saying in the end i paid a little more so i can use my normal email program which mail goes into my Pc but can also access it from any machine with user and password login. It's the only one i've had that reliable and not let me down, it can also be diverted if wanted. I run all my website domain etc through Kynet, www.kynet.co.uk had it for about 4 years now and always been very helpful when needed.

omj624p Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 buy yourself a domain name, and thenuse email redirection to point it anywhere. ie: fred@fredtransit.co.uk >>> fredtramsit@hotmail.com Then if hotmail plays up, just redirect it to somewhere else. No-one will ever know, and you never need to tell anyone your new email address ever again. Domains are £6 ish for 2 years from www.123reg.co.uk with free email redirection from their control panel. I've been doing this for years
FredTransit Posted July 24, 2009 Author Report Posted July 24, 2009 yeah I did say I had my own domain (infact I have 4) in my first post. I am looking for a reliable online email provider.
Savvi Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Can you not have email via your domain name provider ? My provider is Kynet so my email settings are: pop3.kynet.co.uk in outlook etc which i can also log into via the web with my username and password. I had all the same problems and found this to be the best option for business email

FredTransit Posted July 24, 2009 Author Report Posted July 24, 2009 That's what I have been doing for years, and the only problem I have is with the destination for the redirection, like now. I have decided to go with gmail, I am just in the process of forwarding some of my filed emails. Anybody know if the orange email will delete everything if I don't log in for some weeks?
caprinerd Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 same prob fred orange sucks big style our contract is up on 12th aug so we are switching over had to get a migration code and that took weeks to get after being told it would take 5 days so now we have it we have to find another isp
FredTransit Posted July 25, 2009 Author Report Posted July 25, 2009 Well I will leave the internet with them, I didn't have a choice joining them as they bought out wanadoo. Looks like I will be using gmail as there is an option to not show gmail in the 'from' line....
FredTransit Posted July 25, 2009 Author Report Posted July 25, 2009 Anybody used to Gmail? I am trying to get it to retrieve my emails from orange, but get this error message There was a problem connecting to mail.transitcenral.wanadoo.co.uk Show error details Server returned error: "We were unable to locate the other domain. Please contact your other provider." WTF is that all about? Is it something to do with originally being wanadoo, bought out by orange and now FS Mail?
FredTransit Posted August 12, 2009 Author Report Posted August 12, 2009 Been using gmail now for less than a moth, all fine. Still logging on to Orange every day incase I miss something, but today I couldn't . Was OK yesterday but it's down again today. Also in the meantime it stopped recognising my password as entered automatically by Firefox, and I could only get into it directly from the Orange homepage. Firefox is entering the exact same details there, yet it lets me in fine there. I HATE ORANGE!
bigdaz27 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 ive used gmail for about 3 years had no problems at all
FredTransit Posted August 13, 2009 Author Report Posted August 13, 2009 Yep no problems for me either, now I am used to it, but I had forgot how shonky Orange had become.
FredTransit Posted August 15, 2009 Author Report Posted August 15, 2009 OK, anybody now having problems with Gmail? Now getting 414 Bad request - URL is too long. Not good.
