mk1mexico Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Just found this on Ebay, about 15 miles from me http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK1-FORD-CAPRI-19 ... 2a01f5139e Whats your thoughts?
sambo Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 I feel like all my recent posts have been really negative but, i think that having a diesel in an osf is just plain wrong! I dont get the logic, get a really cool car, cortina, escort, capri, whatever... i know, i'll put a diesel in it! Thats a great idea! would you buy a classic aston martin and put a diesl in it cos its economical? No! if you want economy, ( and the worst sounding engine in the world) buy something else!! Ruined a perfectly cool car there i reckon

Ruined a perfectly cool car there i reckon i understand what u say sambobut look at it from my point of veiw. i own 2 osf first is the mk3 zodiac second is my mk1 escort. i can only have one toy and that will be the escort as that was always the plan. ive now had two 6s shit them self in the zodiac. if i went down the 302 route i would have to take a loan out. it would cost a fortune to run as a dailey which would only go up as fuel goes up and possable need to travel further to work. so if both cars are petrol which gos? then i go and buy some bland little disel to get to work or put the diesel straight in the zodiac so at least got a cool car to round in
bortaf Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 The logic is very easy and clear, i choose to use a old ford as a daily and want to be able to afford to use it, tis why theres a 1.8 diesel sat in me garage with RWD cortina mounts on it and a type 9 on the back waiting for the shell to be finished It even had a bosch pump on it so i can run cooking oil, i'll be getting the equivilent of 70 MPG on a daily basis, free road tax and laughing me head off at the plebs doing 30MPG (and paying all that fuel tax to the goverment) and paying road tax, what more is there "turn on, tuine in and opt out" Here have a pic of it
bortaf Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Seems i may have upset a few with the use of the word "plebs", tough, read the dictionary, it meens the common people and that's the context i used it in not in any other way, if it meens sumink differant to you that's not my fault learn English
antz Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 classic car + diesel = fail new car + diesel = fail diesel = fail IN MY OPINION....I dont like them.
over_head_cam Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Cheap, economical, reliable. For a daily why not? They might not be supersonic, but they can go alright, better than some original lumps. I don't understand why people can't just have an opinion. Some have to insist that theirs is the only one worth having
emu Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 The diesel in my daily would be brilliant under the bonnet of something older. 150Bhp, 200 odd lb/ft of torque, twin cam, turbo and RWD
Takeshi Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 I just dont like diesel's, the noise, ths smell and the power delivery on them is silly. Nothing, nothing, TORQUE, slow down, change gear. I'm all for cheaper running etc but why not just buy a diesel in the first place? Eveything has its own place...
sambo Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 classic car + diesel = failnew car + diesel = fail diesel = fail IN MY OPINION....I dont like them.
rallyesport04 Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 cant see the problem with diesil i personaly wouldnt bother fitting one as i have a company vehicle an have no need for a cheap runabout on the otherhand i wouldnt turn my nose up at a osf with a diesil inside modern diesils now can be as fast as petrols an better on fuel an the old ones can run on almost anything
jay_g Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 I can see both sides of this and hate to say that the diesel route could be ok. I see some old skool fords with cosworth engines, zetec's and even Vauxhall lumps in them which is not keeping in line with the cars. But if thats ok then diesel should be too but ONLY with it being made into a positive yet unique quality for the car. chucking in a standard ford 1.8 diesel seems pointless, just go and buy an economical commuter but if the engine was modified or is from a performance diesel donor, and gives the car some very credible performance figures then I think it would have deserved some respect like the other engine transplants I mentioned earlier.
bomber1 Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 the 2.5 tdi out of the scorpio moves fairley well will keep up if not out perform the 2.5 six with double the mpg so to all you dispondant single minded nobs especally the two faced one from yorkshire
FredTransit Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Diesel in an OSF car? Not for me. The newest diesel engine we are running is the 2.5 DI banana, after that, there be dragons...... It's a commercial fuel to me, though I can also see what bortaf is saying, just wouldn't do it myself.

Wessie Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 theres some cracking diesel engines in modern cars, if i had an OSF daily i'd be tempted to drop a modern diesel lump in it
V8ian Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 I dont think it would be hard to get a 11 sec daily driver using a diesel, its not hard to get 225 hp 350ft/lbs from a 2l diesel just with a chip change and a wastegate mod, remove it from a modern car, fit it to somthing like an Escort/or chevette, anything light really, and HeyPresto, you are looking at a tire shredding monster that is fooking quick and returns 40+mpg no matter how hard you drive it, think of the economics, how much will it cost to get a pinto to run those HP figures, and you will NEVER get a nice flat 300ft/lbs torque curve like a diesel. and better than 15mpg on 48s??? Im not saying its right or wrong, just facts!!! Bomber-- I looked into putting a diesel into a Mk3ZZ estate a little while ago, I was looking at building a TowCar for the Cortina, [just because I knew where there was an estate, and an engine] with a 3.0diesel from a 3 or 5 series BMW, comes with a 6 speed box, factory 220+hp and a whopping torque curve, have a chip fitted and the torque will exceed 500ft/lbs, now that will tow an artic trailer with torque like that, There is a hell of a lot of electronics to navigate, and they are overly complicated in this area, but it is workable, or another option is a 3.0 Va----ll Omega diesel, that uses a BMW straight 6 engine, is rated around 200hp/300 ft/lbs and a damn site cheaper to buy a complete car than a 5 series, and you will easily get 35mpg from that engine with a bit of mixed driving
SmokeEm Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 As stated, I think it makes perfect sense for a daily. A friend of mine way back when had his Pug 306 diesel played with by Van Aaken developments and it ate my 735i BMW for breakfast up to 100mph

qwerty Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 I'm very definitely in the pro diesel camp! Infact I'd love a mk5 cortina Estate with a 1.8td in it as a Daily.......hmmm that seems do able!
sambo Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I use a MK2 Cortina as my daily. The thought of putting a diesel in it makes my shit itch. Imagine a nice 1600E going down the road sounding like a bucket of spanners. Mmmm nice. Totally misses the point of having an old ford or any classic car. its like buying a really nice, expensive jacket..... and then sowing mittens in the sleeves cos winters coming and its 'practical'
qwerty Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Is the point of owning an OSF or any classic car to be able to enjoy that car? Is it not far better to drive an OSF with a Diesel than a modern box? They're pretty big into diesel Drag racing in Malta aren't they?

What if someone bought a nice classic ford, put neons on it, with 18" spinner wheels and an ironing board on the boot. would you say at least he enjoys it? I dont think its better to drive a diesel powered osf than drive a modern euro box at all. I think it just misses the whole point and charm of haveing a classic car. I just dont get it at all? I am no purist but, there are just some things that should stay away from classic fords!!!!!!
