RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 im doing a essay assignment thing for college on fueling system one of the question is about the difference in fuel tank on petrol and diesel is the sender different or something thats all i can think of Can anyone help?
MM77 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 One is refilled using the diesel pump and the other the fuel pump
RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 is that it are bafels, sender same
Andrade Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 if i remember correctly diesel pipes are larger than petrol, so diesel would have a larger output hole?
RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 thanks mate don't know much bout diesels really
Andrade Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 thanks mate don't know much bout diesels really not even I, but when i was doing the conversion on the viva my dad mentioned to put in diesel fuel pipes because they are wider, and you get better flow that way (we were suspecting we had a clogged fuel line, but it was the filter at the end of the day)
Andrade Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 this short clip might help http://alumitank.com/freightliner_fuel_tanks.php
moredoorAsh Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Just spoke to my dad and he still has all my old collage files from when i did my apprenticeship, i'm seeing him tomorrow and i'll have a look then
tim Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 diesels work at a higher fuel pressure than petrols and i think petrols have the pump at the tank end whilst diesel have the pump at the engine end
RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 thanks for help yeah diesels do work at higher pressure think they have two pumps one two take fuel intector pump then another high pressure pump before injectors?
Admin Vista Posted January 6, 2010 Admin Report Posted January 6, 2010 thanks for help yeah diesels do work at higher pressure think they have two pumps one two take fuel intector pump then another high pressure pump before injectors? A diesel will have a low pressure lift pump mounted in the vicinity of the tank then a high pressure fuel injection pump that is usually mounted on the engine and often mechanically driven. Not too different to what you might have on a fuel injection petrol car equipped with a swirl pot, i.e. a low pressure or transfer pump from tank to swirl pot and a high pressure pump to the fuel injectors. Off the top of my head, I'm struggling to think of what might be different in a diesel tank. Diesel engines always need a tank return but then so do petrol injection systems. Thinking.................
RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 i really can't think of anything for tank so said there basically baffles ect what would you class as a metering system thats another question on the list. i cant decide if it's were sender tells your fuel level or how the ecu control the amount of fuel it injects
accord83 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Baffle them with bull, in certain climates diesel tanks have heaters to prevent fuel waxing. (be needed here soon!!) See here http://www.arctic-fox.com/
rallyesport04 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 where you fill the tank petrols have a smaller inlet to stop you filling a petrol with diesil as diesil pumps on the forecourt have a larger nozzle than petrol
birdy Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 There's not really much difference between a diesel tank and a petrol tank. All diesel tanks will have a fuel return as diesels tend to return more fuel than they use. In returning fuel it also helps to warm the fuel thus cutting down the possibilty of waxing. Another way of reducing waxing is to ad a drop of petrol as this has a lower freezing point. The only other difference i can think of is the position the tank is mounted in. As petrol is more volatile than diesel the tank is usually mounted a little more out of the way, ie not on the side of the vehicle like seen on trucks etc. As far as i am aware some of the more modern petrol tanks are also fitted with scavenger fuel pumps which you don't normally find with diesels. Even if i'm not 100% right it might get you out of the shite.
RossMK2 Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 anyone got any idea about metering question? what is the metering system the way ecu decides how much fuel ot how the sender reads how much fuel you have?
birdy Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 http://www2.tech.purdue.edu/At/courses/ ... ystems.ppt This link might help.
FredTransit Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 Have to say when converting petrol to deisel, we have never changed a takn, and on the only factory diesel we have the tank looks exactly like a petrol one. There are 2 sender units though. No idea about the ECU, there be dragons.....
