OK its not a clear Yes or No !

But who expected I would even get a reply ?

Heres what I sent to them

I run a website for Classic Ford Escorts www.rallyesportescorts.co.uk all our cars range from 1968 - 1981.

Will The Conservatives be reinstating the "Historic" Tax free status for vehicles when they attain 25 years old ?

Labour stopped this for cars registered post 1973 - I hope you will re-instate the rolling 25 year ruling and give a little something to many potential Conservative voters.

Dear Mr O’Neill,

I am writing on behalf of David Cameron to thank you for your e-mail.

Under the previous Conservative administration, we introduced a rolling measure so that historic vehicles would be exempt from paying vehicle excise duty (the tax disc) if they were more than 25 years old. This was designed to help protect the history and heritage our motoring and transport heritage. However, in 1997, the current Labour Government froze the rolling aspect of this exemption; introducing a fixed cut off date instead. This meant that owners of any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1973 would have to pay vehicle excise duty if they were not declared to be off the road (SORN).

We fully understand your concern with this issue. Under the current arrangements there is a real danger that the tax on vehicles registered after 1973 may become too expensive for enthusiasts to afford. This is particularly an issue when an enthusiast has a collection of several vehicles. Many owners may only tax them for a few months in summer or even take them off the road indefinitely. The current system limits the opportunities of seeing these vehicles on the road and the additional costs could prove so burdensome that they threaten jobs in the restoration sector.

We believe that examples of our rich motoring history should be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations to come. As we move further away from the 1973 cut off date, the argument gets stronger and stronger to revise the current system. Obviously, in the current financial climate, any change could only be taken after careful consideration of the fiscal impact.

Yours sincerely,

Nicola Sheldon

I have a road tax bill here for my 1979 MKII RS2000 for £190.00

So if it is scrapped altogether I have lost nothing in trying to get the threshold moved back to 25 year old

With a general election looming now is the time to ask the main parties questions as they will be after any votes possible

Thats good enough for me, fook labour

Time we fooked labour after all, they've fooked the UK!

You may have a £190 road tax bill for your RS2000, im sure they will increase that as wellwould you still be happy at £250 ??? , so have you gained anything, as they will be looking at all aspects of tax, not just the tax free, as the reply they sent you has alot of very grey areas. and leaves alot to be desired.

Well I utilise my right to vote and live by the decision I make in an election - lets hope others do the same and get out and vote

maybe we should just all stop payin road tax and tell them all to shove it, what would they do if everyone just went "errr...no"

having read the reply a few times now, the more i see a political statement where everything is said but nothing is agreed and set in stone. Once they get in they do as they wish anyway

But what is clear and everyone knows, is that the UK is in more debt than every before, i really carnt see any party at all, putting the rolling system in place and forgoing all that income.

What have the other political parties replied ???

Or did she in fact set this country on the road to the financial prosperity that it enjoyed from the mid/late 80's and up to 97? Twelve years of labour and we're broke again

I'm with you GJUK

Anyway, we've digressed. Do I want free road tax for classics reinstated? Yes of course! And I think the lost tax revenue will be a drop in the ocean next to what's been wasted on ill though out policies from this government

Not forgetting the 1991-1992 recession and the mess the country was in after 18 years of the Conservatives.

Nows the time to start asking political parties about the tax exemption. From the Conservative reply it looks like a no, and with all the cuts Cameron wants to make I doubt he will be giving anything away for free if anything the road tax will probably increase.
