BaileyMex Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Hi people, this is a sort of tech question but more of a what do you think post. After getting home from the Ace yesterday, I popped the bonnet, like you do, and oil has been spat out all over the place and it looks like its coming thru the tiny hole on the top of the oil filler cap, I've got a catcher tank fitted also, but can I block up this hole or would that be a NO NO?
erick Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Need to find the cause of why oil is being forced back out of the cap, blocking the hole is not recommended, as the engine needs to breathe. Cheak your breather system out first might be blocked, hopefully thats all it is.
Fiesta Steve Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 If its a tiny hole then you could plug it but as erick says it needs to breath. And no engine more than a x-flow. You want it breathing from atleast the rocker cover and the crank-case or you risk blowing seals and gaskets. I've seen racers with two, half inch pipes in the rocker covers to get them to breathe, as well as block breathers. The higher the state of tune the more it'll want to breathe.
fezza Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Are the breathers on rwd x flows the same as the fiesta breathers, one at the rear of the bock and one from the cap,how many pipes are going to your catch tank, one from the block and one from the cap ??

Is there a breather on the catch tank Silly question I know, but I've seen tanks without breathers

Is there a breather on the catch tank Silly question I know, but I've seen tanks without breathers i think most catch tanks have a breather on there, two inlets and one outlet, just wondering what tank Colin has as last time i see the car the catch tank was of the stella variety,so im not sure if he has one,lol
Posse Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 how about drilling a hole at the back of the rocker cover and putting a k@n little breather filter on it
Fiesta Steve Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 how about drilling a hole at the back of the rocker cover and putting a k@n little breather filter on it That'll work but will still throw oil out of it. It needs to go to a catch tank really.
ratman Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 colin is your oil cap the type with the metal gause in it ?? we used to take them apart and wash the gause in petrol (to get all the crap out) dry with the air line and re-fit or buy a new one as the guys have said dont block the hole see colin you will race it (m25)

Posse Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 there you go colin get your self a catcher tank
Fiesta Steve Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Well it will help it breath but won't sort the oil problem
erick Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 With the cap removed is there excessive blow back out of the rocker cover?
BaileyMex Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 Thanks for the responces guys, here is a pic of the rocker cover, the catcher tank is not in this picture, I have it positioned as high as possible on the near side inner wing, The catcher tank does have a K&N breather on the top, one pipe in, but no pipe going to the rocker cover as its one of those chrome jobbies.
escort21 Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Maybe it would be best to use a cap with a nozzle on it and attach that to the catch tank, got mine from burtons ...have a look...
BaileyMex Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 I dunno if one of those would fit, mine is a screw on cap not a push fit
Fiesta Steve Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 You'd need a pipe welded into your r/c then
Col-ashtonmobile Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 got a pic of your cover , cant remember what it looks like
fezza Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 You'd need a pipe welded into your r/c then Hes only got one inlet on his catch tank i think
Fiesta Steve Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 You'd need a pipe welded into your r/c then Hes only got one inlet on his catch tank i think Even if he had two it wouldn't help the engine breath cos its still pushing the same amount or air through one out-let. I vent the block breather to a catch tank and the r/c breather to the road.
BaileyMex Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 Ok, heres some pics I've just taken of the cap/neck and breather As you can see its spat oil out everywhere
Col-ashtonmobile Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 RIGHT M8 , OBVIOUSLY THE BLOCK BREATHER ISNT SUFFICENT ENOUGH, SO THE ROCKER COVER NEEDS AN OUTLET , TAKE THE COVER OFF & WE CAN EITHER TAP YOU A LITTLE BREATHER FILTER IN OR TAP A HOSE IN AND TEE INTO THE HOSE GOING TO THE CATCH TANK
Fiesta Steve Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 TAP A HOSE IN AND TEE INTO THE HOSE GOING TO THE CATCH TANK Tapping into the existing breather will make no difference at all as the whole engine will still be breathing out of that little filter on the catch tank. Look at the size of the outlet under the filter, its tiny !!! SO THE ROCKER COVER NEEDS AN OUTLET , TAKE THE COVER OFF & WE CAN EITHER TAP YOU A LITTLE BREATHER FILTER IN This would help the engine breath better as it is an extra outlet.
BaileyMex Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 Look at the size of the outlet under the filter, its tiny !!! Mate that K&N Filter it massive compared to some i've seen Also the catch tank sight tube shows that its hardlt got anything in it, When I had the stella can after one trip back from the pod it was nearly half full
Fiesta Steve Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Look at the size of the outlet under the filter, its tiny !!! Mate that K&N Filter it massive compared to some i've seen Its the size of the pipe under the filter that is the problem, I can see how big ther filter is, i've seen smaller air filters My point is m8, is that it doesn't matter if you fit 10 pipes in your r/c if they all vent out through the same small pipe you gain absolutly nothing.
