lotusless Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 have a read of this....... http://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/foru ... =1&t=12571
Fiesta Steve Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Looks dangerous to me. My father inlaw fitted a 525 engine into his Capri, the whole conversion was completed in a weekend and doesn't look dangerous.
banarama Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 looks like a hell of a lot of work.not sure about his weldling .what about the wiring
4DOOR-SHERWOOD Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 it looks what it is...... Gash and crap! that welding is shocking
steve dray Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Gonna weigh about 5 tons by the time it's finished!
lotusless Posted November 22, 2010 Author Report Posted November 22, 2010 maybe he used to weld up battleships
tom28 Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 why dont he just buy a mk1 and restore it.. or 2nd thoughts maybe not..
Grizzley Dell Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 just dont understand it. part of loving my osf is the fact that it drives as bad as it looks. if it good brakes a quiet engine and al the mod cons it wouldnt be an osf and thus not so much fun. part of the thrill is not knowing if it will stop or steer where it should. heart pumping, ring clenching adrenelin rush.
petrolhead Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I like it, the Mk1 he had looked really bad and destined for the crusher so why not? He has made a RWD car that I reckon will go really well and is different. He has done it all himself, with a vision - Fair Play
xrt_si Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 As Petrolhead has said, it's not a terrible idea in my book. Sure I wouldn't do it, but there's some credit in there somewhere.
Tom Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I agree with steve, Plus the E36 compact was a crap car with crap handling, BMW even built in understeer to the suspension geometry. Admitted the IS engine is ok but pulling that weight about? no thanks Good idea, bad application
zetecmk2 Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 ok, so he could have researched the doner chassis a bit more...but i like his attitude some of the pics scare me!
JAY PS Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 and me downright dangerous if it ever has a shunt
Andrade Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 westcoast customs had done something similar with a dodge charger if i recall well. putting the old charger body on the new charger chassis. It was for the afro guy of CSI
BIG G Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 bet it is as heavy as two escorts with all that steel in there
Madify Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 It's lighter than an e36, but heavier than a mk1, but your right, this is so dangerous and the tack welding to hold it's shape in the interim is shocking. I once saw a mk1 with a Sierra floorpan, now that's dangerous!!!! Could you imagine having a crash in a Sierra? No airbags, no abs, no crumple zones, doesn't bear think off. P.s this wouldn't pass a BIVA in a million years, it even has a different key to the locking fuel cap!!! Not to mention how far mk1 escort door handles protrude, I'm fact shame on anyone driving a mk1 with a modified gearbox tunnel to fit a 5 speed and not declaring it to vosa, having their tax exempt status stripped, and getting a Q plate!!!!! how dangerous and illegal those cars are too in the eyes of Vosa

I once saw a mk1 with a jelly mould floorpan, now that's dangerous!!!! Could you imagine having a crash in a jelly mould? No airbags, no abs, no crumple zones, doesn't bear think off. Madify Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Just for the sake of it, there are a lot of dangerous modifications made to escorts, and a lot of you guys on here are flouting the law every time you get behind the wheel. How about, larger transmission tunnel, large diff tunnel, pro link kit, flat boot floor? If you vehicle has any of the above, you have a modified monocoupe shell, hence falling into the category of modified vehicle, subjecting it legally to BIVA, so if you haven't had your car BIVA'd not only is your car dangerous it's also illegally on the road. So get yourself a BIVA application form, get ready to loose your v5c, get a new reg mark, loose your osf status as your builld date will be first registered from that date, and be prepared to fail as 98% of production cars would fail a BIVA, let alone on OSF!!!!!
Tom Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 I take it it's your project? I think comparing fitting a larger gearbox tunnel to the work thats been done to that e36 is a little (a lot) unfair. Fair enough some of the comments on here will offend but, from the pictures, it does look unsafe. I like the 'scrapheap challenge' style of working but I don't think a car like that, that isn't professionally built, should be on the road

Madify Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 from the pictures, it does look unsafe. Which finnished, strenghend, bosses and gusseted picture are you refering to? or are you just useing your imagination as to what it is going to be finnished as? I think comparing fitting a larger gearbox tunnel to the work thats been done to that e46 is a little (a lot) unfair are you saying, modifying the monocoupe is not a job for vosa? and I can tell you, if you took a mk1 escort to vosa for a BIVA !!!IT WILL FAIL ON LOADS"""" hence it would not be safe for the road? Not safe to be on the road to me says unsafe, so yes, thats exactly what i'm saying in comparison. vosa can kiss my fat arse my thoughts exactly, as long as this passes an mot when finnished, doesnt bend and twist when you jack it up from any corner, stops as well as if not better than an E36 (remebering it will be nearly 200 kilos lighter than the E36), then I'm happy. As to crashing....how do you think you would fair in a head on crash in a standard mk1 escort? Infact, what is the N Cap rateing for a 1969 Escort? I'll take my chances in a crash, what with my airbags and full safty cage.
