Streetfighter Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 As the title really... I'm considering a set of 40s but i've been warned they're a massive pain to use daily. So what's the general verdict?
banarama Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 depends on engine spec really.not a good idea if your going to be in traffic a lot.
shaun1.6ghia Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 a couple of people i know have used them everyday and been fine. as with any part of a osf if you look after them they'll work fine
PaulMags Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I used to when petrol was a £1 a gallon
rsdaz Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I'v driven a 2.2 pinto with 45's every day and it was absolutlley fine. The only problem is they're thirsty, but it's worth it for the noise
Streetfighter Posted January 24, 2011 Author Report Posted January 24, 2011 My old man says if'll be a bad idea. But i've proved him wrong so far so I kinda wanna go for it. The fuel economy has crossed my mind though... But so has the thought of the sight and sound. I only travel less than 2 miles from work... Still drive though.
herb capri Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 well i have a mate with a balanced 1640 x flow with twin dellortos 36 mm chokes and really well set up engine ,he has very few probs and mpg around 28 mpg ! oh and its in a vaux shovit, so can be done, also dellortos have much finer jet choices than webbers, ford actually were the main buyer of the dellortos in the early years of imports in the uk. mike
8ball Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 i ran my capri on twin 40 dellortos for the whole of last year. i found they were giving me better mpg in the 2lt than on the stnadard carb. but i did spend a bit getting them set up properly and il be putting twing 45s on to my new engine
Streetfighter Posted January 24, 2011 Author Report Posted January 24, 2011 I have considered Dellortos. Only issue being parts availability.
Fiesta Steve Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Lots of cars left thr factory with twin Webers fitted as standard, they were all fine ....???
oxb1l Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Ran my mk1 escort with 40's and it was worse when i put a weber on it in all areas
Fishtailparka Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 My Escort with Pinto and twin 40 Dellortos does 32mpg on a long run. I can make it do less if I want to. No reason why not to use them daily. Mpg will go down if you drive like a dick, but it is hard not to with that noise.
Streetfighter Posted January 25, 2011 Author Report Posted January 25, 2011 I'm hoping (friend providing) to have a set sorted at the weekend. So i'll give them a whirl. If not i've still got a set of bike carbs in case the 40s fall through...
PlopPlop Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Whichever ones you go for, setting up for your engine is the key to reliability
fezza Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Whichever ones you go for, setting up for your engine is the key to reliability Good advise too many people throw a set of webers at an engine and expect them to work, having them set up properly is vital
w p e Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Lots of cars left thr factory with twin Webers fitted as standard, they were all fine ....??? well said that man . alfa/roots group/fiat/ ford all with no probs
petrolhead Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 The answer to the original question is yes I used 45's daily Just get them set up properly. You won't get as many mpg as a DGAV but that's the compromise you make should you decide to go for them.
Streetfighter Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 Yeah, i'm well aware the MPG is going to plummet. But right now the Cortina's idling about 1600 rpm so just burning fuel for a laugh with the 32/36 on it right now. Bent throttle butterflys if anyone was wondering . So i'm guessing that the MPG will drop maybe 5 or 6 with 40's, but the power should also raise by about 4 or 5BHP... Is that a fair assessment or am I way off ?
herb capri Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 the main thing you must realise, is unless the engine has been well modified to really "breathe" very well, is you will just drown it with fuel and it may reduce power in some cases where they are put on standard motors, or you use non matching ,badly maintained old carbs. i know as i picked up an alledgedly "mental" pinto and found different forties one with 45 mm chokes the other was 36mm, yea mental!!! mike

The DCOE is capable of flowing more air than a stock carb, the amount of fuel is dependant only on jetting. Jetted correctly it should still only provide the same air/fuel ratio of any carb. With incorrect sized chokes a standard engine is more likely to be drowned in air !
