To me the south london look is all about clean lines no arches & a slammed stance could not give a monkeys about the tyre size although most people and the mags seem to think it is the elastic bands that complete the look

when i had my Mk1's in the mid / late 80's the rules were always slammed on 6" rims with 185's and quite rarley on 7" rims with 175's i would say the look started off with 185's but got taken over with the popularity of 175's

 

Personally i love the look of a mk1 with 7" rims on elastic bands

I'm firmly in the 185/60 club. Not because I know anything about the South London look (then or now) but because I think 50's look daft as a box of frogs. Their scale is all out of proportion with the wheel and unless the car has been lowered so much it's scraping its arse on the ground the arch gaps are all wrong.................and that's before I get started on the ridiculous gearing implications.

I would have said that Sutton High Street in the 80,s the majority had 185,60s (Saarrf London)

 

Some had 205s, but not many
