On Escorts I prefer 185/60s as i think 175/50s look too small on the front because the arch doesnt hug the wheel as well as it does on the back.

That's very diplomatic

I'm firmly in the 185/60 club. Not because I know anything about the South London look (then or now) but because I think 50's look daft as a box of frogs. Their scale is all out of proportion with the wheel and unless the car has been lowered so much it's scraping its arse on the ground the arch gaps are all wrong.................and that's before I get started on the ridiculous gearing implications.

In fact every time I see on 50's I think "there goes another follower of fashion, Baaaaaaaaa"

well i dont mind either tyre size but my new car has 50 series tyres on it allready + its freeking low! so i'm not about to change them anytime soon. :finger::finger::finger::finger::finger::finger:

by the way as an original "south london style" driver i dont remember having a choice of fookin 50 series tyres back in the day we just drove our cars + didn't compare profile size!

i know i'm probably gonna get raped for this but why is everyone always obsessed with the 'saarf London look'?,Northerners can slam a car over 13's as well.

when i was a younger kid it always seemed to be 185 60's on 6" rims round sutton. i never remember ever being that bothered about tyres and sizes back then though as long as they smoked lol!. but today im so glad there are 175 50's available as im not a fan of taller sidewalls

Id say that proper old south london look was 185 60s or 195 55s if you could get hold of them on a very very low anglia/cortina/escort ect normaly in primer and a bit tatty cos no one could aford shiny paint and it was all about building a car for a bit of fun that was quick for pocket money i remember it sounds sad but we had fu** all money driving around tyre shops and looking at scrap tyres when they were shut and looking for barely legel 185/60s cos they were so expensive as for 175/50s if they were more avalable then we would of fitted them i spose.

so from reading this 185 60's are old skool tyers for old skool cars which im my book look spot on!

and 175 60 are new skool tyers for old skool cars its a bit like "puttin a non old skool ford engin" in your OSF debate lmao

personaly 175 60 13's can look ok on escorts only on a hard slam... but 185 60 always look best especialy on anglias cortins 100 e's and capri's... but as i was in primary school in the 80's i can't coment on what they use to run

To a Scot, the 'Sarf London Look' has to be lowered with subtle lines on whatever rims and tyres suit, oh and a 'Savaloy Supper' hanging oot the windae!!!!!!!!

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

catford kev is wrong , 60 was always the way pirelle or firestones nuff said wayne

One of my 1st Escorts (circa 1986  ) was a MK1 1300 Sport Daytona yellow Dropped by 2" all round on a set of 6" cyclone interceptor wheels (chrome minilite replicas")with Firestone 660 185/60's and a Square front number plate , proper early south london look :ykt:

Whatever the look, the sarf londoners who invented the look will be soft shandy drinking jessies.

Northerners Rule!!

I like both, but i guess with a 50 profile you dont get any sidewall flex. Now there is 195.45.13 available, which i believe was on the silver Harrier owned by Dave, but those wheels were 8-8.5j wide.

Back in the day i had 185.60.13 as im sure 175.50's wasnt available.

Gotta love Firestone ditchfinders

South London? In the eighties anywhere in the country where there were lots of cheap old fords and spotty youths, I can assure you there were cars that were slammed, clean lines, and square plates. As for tyre height, its personal choice, I like the 185 60 13's they fill the arches nicely
