Modifying Escorts in the 80's (pic heavy)

My brother just mailed me some pics of his Escorts from the early 80's so I thought I should share

 

My brothers, MINT (and firsst) 3 year old RS2000 Base

 

Shortly after reading to many magazines of the day, the Xpack arches had to be done

 

me with no clue of what I was doing

 

 

Preping for paint!

 

 

Finito

 

 

 

 

 

This 1980 Custom was bought out in Belgium by my sister

 

And promptly brought back to the UK & registered

 

then converted to RHD, it had only done about 20k kms

 

This Escort started life as a humble Pop

 

And had this 3.0ltr GT engine fitted for good measure

 

Then ragged around West London in primer & works arches scaring the sh1t out most other cars on the road

 

Then once painted there was only one car it could replicate

1967 - 2005 I grew up on the "racecourse"

 

Obviously know Hayes very very well (even lived there for a bit), when I was younger we used to ride our motorcross bikes on springfields before they flattened it.

 

I did my apprentiship at Fords; Iron Bridge Garages Southall (and later when it was Neil Smiths)

 

I was even the Sales manager @ hayes bridge Fiat/Alfa in 2001-2003

Yep know all them places mate .I live in Woodrow Avenue,just round the corner from the infamous Brook House pub do you know it ?.Ever heard of Simon Rickwood,Tony Pockney or Martin Thatcher ,they all used to tear about the local area in mk2 cortinas and mk1/2 escorts ? Do you remember Ed Turners in Hayes Town ,used to sell customs and hotrods ?

Yeah I know the Brook House Pub, I used to own a house just off Kingshill. I also remember Ed Turners shop, but not any of those other names, I got out of the Ford Scene in 89 so if they were tearing around after that then we wouldnt have crossed paths.

I was pretty special back then and we had some good times in it

 

Funny thing is, although looked like an 100% original RS it ended up with an Oselli Engineering Pinto and was quicker than the 3.0ltr

You would have probably seen them and the many others we had between us, unfortunatley there are no photos of the others except for a 2.0ltr mk2 pop i built There was a guy called Dion in south harrow who had a 3.0 MK1 and another 3.0ltr mk1 in daytona yellow in Martin Drive oppersite silverdale owned buy John Bowden

 

I only worked for Niel Smith for about 12 months, it was much better before he owned it! When I finished my apprenticeship I walked out, the service manager was a complete w4nker

Those were the days you could park your car on the street without the need to lock it away, chain it down, alarm it to the hilt, wire it to the mains etc...

Used to be some naughty motors go there . Leon Green had the fastest Escorts back then , Sheldon and Cliff Judkins had some quick cars and rockerbilly Brian had some v8 powered machines Good days back then

I used to get down to the burger van on victoria road in the white mk2 above, that would have been around 86-87 ish when the van was parked at the entrance to the dump, My mate also used to get down there who had a venetian red sport.

 

Leon Green rings a bell and im wondering if im confusing him with the guy I mentioned above as "dion", as he was a mate of my brothers and had a lockup garage up the top of south harrow and was slowly building a 3.0ltr mk1 in it!

 

The only rockerbilly I knew back then was Rocky Edlin who used to drive some monsterous yanks, but I think a few of them used to drink in the Eascote Arms IIRC

Good to see pics like yours especially the way you used the same workshop area as me i.e the road the amount of cars i built / put together / painted in the road is countless and most started with the grey primer look for a while , Good times ....
