Admin Mk2Jo Posted September 7, 2012 Admin Report Posted September 7, 2012 I always, always use either Shell Super VpowerMax (whatever it is now) or Esso or BP (in that order) but have been forced, due to lack of petrol stations while out and about, to use Tesco Super Unleaded (which is actually supposed to be 99 ron). And I was always under the impression that the supermarket fuels are not as good as the branded fuels - the problem being what they don't have in them as opposed to what they do have in them (if that makes sense) What's your view on this and do you only use branded fuels or do you use supermarket fuels as well and is it all hype anyway and they are all blended in the same place with a different sticker on them ? I would imagine the engine builders on here would have a good experience of the damage caused by bad/inadequate fuel.
Admin Vista Posted September 7, 2012 Admin Report Posted September 7, 2012 I only use supermarket fuels. Why? Well because we have a fuel terminal here in Plymouth (Cattedown) where the tankers (ship type tankers) discharge their cargo to shore tanks..............to be collected from the shore tanks by road tankers for delivery to local filling stations. Yep, you got it, they ALL fill up from the same place regardless of whether it says Shell, BP, Morrisons or ASDA on the side of the road tanker.
dalmarshall Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Loudboy is a tanker driver, he'll tell ya the same as vista. I was only using bp for the mk1 until he told me this!
theloudboy Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Loudboy is a tanker driver, he'll tell ya the same as vista. I was only using bp for the mk1 until he told me this! You forgot that BP ultimate does not come from the same place as that crap russian fuel that we are now delivering, now that shell have got greenergy fuels aka tesco to make v power i won't touch the stuff and would it put you off using it if i told you they pump propain through the petrol cos it does not make enough octane rating to be sold at the pumps, i know cos i worked for shell gas. Coryton will be open early next year so at least then we will get proper fuel to put in our cars.
BaileyMex Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 WOW I never knew half of that!! I used to use Shell Vpower.Optimax when I lived in South London, but since moving in 2005 just anywhere really as there is not a shell near me, I do a hell of a lot of miles so I use Tesco all the time (to get the points for the Mrs as well ) Never had a problem with Tesco.......................so far
Admin Mk2Jo Posted September 9, 2012 Author Admin Report Posted September 9, 2012 Well, this info has certainly opened my eyes as well Went over to the nearest Tesco fuel station yesterday (7 miles away but I was shopping out that way anyway) and paid £142.9 for Super and it's £149.9 here in the local Shell station ... feckin 7p a litre on a whole tank is worth the trip Not sure what propane does to your engine but obviously it's not good Loudboy? And not sure about the Russian fuel bit - what do you mean? Is it better than where the other stuff comes from?
97CI Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Btcc boys were using Tesco petrol a couple of years back if it's good enough for them then it's good enough for me.
Tall paul Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I've always used tesco since I can remember in the cars and bikes I used to have. Find them quite cheap and as said the points come in handy
gearbox100 Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 we have a local morrisons here and i never use it, the fuel is terrible. We race motocross and a few people where having problems with there bikes, after stripping carbs and the problems where still there they tried new fuel and the problem was gone, found out they bought there fuel from morrisons, they put what was left of the fuel in there genny`s and they then played up , good enough for me not to use it.
theloudboy Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Btcc boys were using Tesco petrol a couple of years back if it's good enough for them then it's good enough for me. Sorry but you think that the BTCC boys use the same fuel as what you buy from the pumps i think not mate, raceing fuel will have a larger content of lead for one thing and be a totally different blend.
theloudboy Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 1 When i asked the engineers where the fuel comes from that we now take out i was told it comes from the baltic states. 2 The fuel that used to come out of coryton was refined at corton from crude from the north sea or the arab states and smells and looks totally different to the baltic state fuel. 3 Fuel sold at the pump has the met british standards if you look at the pump you will see the BS number and they check the fuel that comes in on the boats and somethings it would not met the standard so will used to pump propane through the fuel it would then pass the test and be taken out to be sold. 4 When greenergy took over making the v-power the colour and smell of it change like you would not belive the smell of fish that it gives off now is unreal i don't know what they have done to it. 5 And the worse thing of all even the engineers that test the fuel say it is not as good as the stuff that was once refined here. All of the above i have been told by people that work in the industry i know nothing i only deliver the stuff.

Interesting point except UNleaded fuel is called that because it has no lead in it ! Drag racing and sprinting are one of the few MSA racing types that can still use Leaded 'specialty' fuels. Agreed I don't see all the BTCC boys queueing at Tescos for a top up but the fuel is unleaded!
Ken B Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 BTCC use Hiperflo 300, which is a control fuel made for them. If you look at the product list, it is the only one that doesn't state unleaded. I would take that to say it does have a lead content. My own guess is that is based on AVGAS which as we all know contains lead. http://www.vitalequipment.co.uk/index.p ... ory_id=165

As a control fuel, i'm guessing they don't have to say what's in it cos no one needs to know! Even F1 use unleaded - very cleverly blended and high octane but unleaded nonetheless! As BTCC do also monitor emissions then the case for using leaded fuels is pretty slim - cats don't last long, also lambda sensors can die after about 30 minutes with 'the good stuff'
