Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 reading a few other forums this morning and looking at restorations. iv noticed that with a lot of wing fittings etc, the final result is on the piss. iv seen it so often in mags etc. now dont get me wrong here it may sound like im being rude but my point is: are the wings any good to begin with ie reproduction wings, or is it the fact that changing wings between vehicles makes fitting more difficult. most the people that build these cars are proffessional / competant so i dont see how this happens the most popular problems seem to be: *drivers wing (front where meets bonnet) tends to dive downwards *wonky quarter bumpers *poor fitting around doors no pictures as it would be unfair of me to single out any particular cars is the job any easier with new old stock wings, thus the higher price???
60ftman Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Problem is with repro wings (and the cheaper ones in particular) they tend to come out of well-used or bad quality bucks. The body and swage lines tend to be less defined, and the shape of the panels in general is sometimes really poor. Bottom line is - if you want perfection it's going to cost about the same whether you buy NOS original panels (which fit more-or-less straight on) or cheap repro's which will take sh*te-loads of labour to get right.
escortmad79 Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Lopsided quarter bumpers look gash!!
Gareth Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 The 1/4 bumpers normally have something to do with the bumper irons... I think you need the correct 1/4 bumper irons too
Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 where the bumpers bolt to the side of ther wing looks the problem its always too low by the looks of it i have a perfect picture but i cant post it in case sum1 on here owns it
bomber1 Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 these cars are all over 20+yrs old thats a lot of bumps and scrapes to warp these cars. any panel will need fettling on any car to get right. cant wait for the likes of u to finish yer car so we can pick holes in it some off us just want reasnable cars that we can have fun with
Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 no offense intended mate, sorry you feel that way
OllieC Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 well i know capri repro wings never fit right, too short and leave a massive gap between bonnet and wing ive got a pair on mine and they look shocking
bomber1 Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 no offense intended mate, sorry you feel that way none taken but uve got the likes of me n jay who just want usable cars. then theres certain peps on here with no usable car critsising a 40k car cos the bootlid is half inch out on one side. wtf ford factory tollarences were prob more than that from the factory

Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 i know what you mean, it was never a case of picking holes though really
bomber1 Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 i know what you mean, it was never a case of picking holes though really look i dont say things unless i need to. just some of us have to pay through the nose for paint panel work so i can live without a perfect car as long as it goes sideways im happy bunny. dont like peps picking holes in cars when the owner is prob the biggest critick of his own car
teamtom Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 i think people need to lighten up a bit to be honest, Placeborick was merely asking why wings can be so far out. why jump down his throat about it? He werent saying anyone imparticular had a car that was pissed, he was merely passing the comment that they "can be" and that "some are"!. He even said no pictures as it would be unfair of me to single out any particular cars so why are people so offended. People on this site always seem to fly off the handle when people are merely asking for help or answers and its starting to get on my nerves. Chill people, he didnt offend anyone in any way -- end of -- Placeborick When i worked at renault for my work experience in the body shop, the guys said that even today in the renault factory "all renault cars are made within 5mm" and that is the tolerance with renault. there will always be panels that dont quite fit and make the car look "pissed" Hope this answers your questions. Cheers Tom

Cheers Tom I aggree with you here m8, everyboby needs to chill Placeborick was simply asking why panels don't fit, and its a good question. I don't see no 'bitchin' Take a look at his thread in projects and resto (if you haven't already) and look at the amount of time and effort he has put into his car. It doesn't look like a 40k car to me, but his efforts are outstanding so why the hell shouldn't he want panels that fit
caprifan Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 ..Capri wings are a perfect example mate...the repro wings are frankly shocking...the tooling is shot and even with the best bodywork man the gaps can be nasty...........
Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 do they still make capri wings or is it a case of NOS reproduction wings as with escorts
caprifan Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 ...the only new wings you can get are Repro.....the problem being the newer wings you buy are worse as the tooling is constantly getting worse with ripples on the tops of the wings etc etc..... genuine Ford wings are really rare now and will cost you £300 + if you can find them and if the owner is willing to sell....£1000 for 2 wings has been turned down before now.... I am hoping in the near future there may be a good quality alternative that fits as well as Ford wings
Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 feckin hell... wish i could come across a couple of presses in an old warehouse... oh look ford wings surely a good panel beater can make things like this
60ftman Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Yes, a good body man could easily make replacement wings for your Escort / Capri / Cortina, but they would charge you £1500+ per wing because of the labour involved. Anyway, I'm really pi**ed off that you b*st*rds are criticising the panel gaps on my car. It's not easy welding on fibreglass wings - trying to get a decent earth through the Isopon in the strut-tops was a nightmare as well (and the resulting fire left a fairly big panel gap in the garage!). Next time I'll try brazing as I'm sure the flux will allow everything to bond. Now, where is that oxy-acetylene?........
Rick Posted February 9, 2007 Author Report Posted February 9, 2007 bit of t-cut will get rid of those gaps
60ftman Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Ah, no wonder I've got big gaps - I've been using T-Gel!!!!!!
teamtom Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 hehe like your sense of humour 60ftman
