Im currently looking for a brake upgrade for my mk1 but want to keep the rs alloys and dont fancy getting 15" wheels.

What options are they out there? does anyone do an off the shelf rear disc conversion?

Thanks in advance!

i have hi-spec 4 pots on front with drums on the rear of my capri. stopped me fine when someone pulled out on me in pooring rain. i had big problems with brake squeel when i first installed but with a little modification to the pads i solved that.

Loads of options, depending on budget. Decent discs and pads is a cheap and effective upgrade, vented next, then 4 pot conversion. Alternatively have a look at Caprisport kits, they're great value if you can source your own calipers etc. I've fitted their 280mm kit and sierra calipers/discs on the rear. Not used them yet, but if it's good enough to stop a Cossie, then it'll be fine for me. Really depends on what you plan on using them for, and how much pennies you want to throw at it.

Cheers guys! I just need better than what iv got at the minute as i would like to do a couple of track days and im used to the brakes in my old clio williams (which has wilwood front calipers). I was looking at the wilwood conversion but I didn't know if there was a cheaper 4 pot option you can get from another model. I better get saving!

Princess calipers are a good upgrade, but they're getting quite scarce now, and the value is creeping up. The LDV Convoy van used a similar caliper, but i've never been able to compare them side by side.

I had Wilwoods on my Mk3 Cortina and really wasn't impressed. On rebuilding my car I've swapped back to standard M16s with a spacer kit and decent pads.

Totally agree. Too many people get lured in by Wilwood 4 pots, the pistons are tiny in comparison to the M16s. Best upgrade I ever made pound for pound was a set of Ferrodo DS2500. With a good set of discs those pads stopped on a dime.

for road use i reckon ds2500 or ds performance pads in M16 or Princess callipers is more than enough for road use. found the DS pads really good in other cars and plan to fit them into my princess callipers and fit the bigger disc to loose the pad over lap.

recently posted on here about brakes and vibe seems to be refurbed princess callipers seem to work really well but down side is the weight. read to many stories of alloy callipers flexing nd not lasting to well or just not performing as well as people hoped.

Pads i think are most important part. On my Caterham it had originally factory 2pots and solid disc but expensive special pads from a 7 racing specialist. i then upgraded to larger vents and AP 4pots but with DS performance pads and they were good and seemed to stay cooler etc but cant say overall were that much better, then changed to same compound pads i had in old 2 pots and now are another league

Spot on, the pads are the most important component. Far too many people dive in and buy Wilwood calipers without fully exploring the potential of their current system. The princess calipers are more than able, and yes they are heavier, but stronger with it. We're not driving fully spaceframed, kevlar panelled race cars, so who cares if the calipers are a couple of Kgs heavier, I'm more interested in the ability to stop! If i went on a diet, i'd probably be able to lose the equivalent of fitting carbon panels!!

You did it right, saved up and bought a set of APs.......... Proper brakes!.

One common misconception is that Princess Calipers are considerably heavier than M16s but its not as great as you may think.

Standard M16 at 3900 grams
Princess 4 Pot at 4500 grams

i went volvo 240  4 pots bit of calliper mod on mount holes, 2.8 vented discs very cheap and they just fitted under my lotus steels, with 8mm wheel spacers fitted to clear the rivets .though with all 13 alloys fit fine no spacer needed,

stops well

It all depends on budget I guess. I had 2.8i capri m16s with vented discs and standard pads on my mk2. Brakes were shocking! Now I have hi-spec r114 4 pots with 274mm vented & grooved discs and green stuff pads, with RS 9" drums on the rear. Stops better than most modern cars :)
