Have a new alternator on the way that doesnt come with a pulley so I thought maybe consider a change to polly V type fan belt kits. Are they really worth it? Are there any advantages or benefits? Thanks

Silly overpriced bling if you ask me, probably useful if you've a really high revving motor but I wouldn't waste my money. In 15 years of running escorts and capris I've never had a standard one let go.

Same for me.

I have one, but I fitted it because my super-charger has a poly-v pulley and I wanted to standardise my engine parts.

I wouldn't do it otherwise I think, as you lose the timing marks on the crank pulley, so timing becomes a bit tricky. Also, I seem to remember I had to get the water pump pulley turned a little to fit.

Looks nice though:

One word of caution - alternators come with 15mm keyed shaft and 17mm un-keyed and most poly vee pullies come to fit 17mm, the old deep vee pullies tend to be 15mm - they aren't directly inter-changable obviously - I found out the expensive way! LOL.

hmmmm, you run a super charger on a pinto? got any pictures of it & do you have to do any thing different to the engine in order to run one?

I don't have it working yet...and it's not on the engine in the above photo, but yes, I have a Toyota SC14 supercharger from an Aussie spec MR2 to go on my Pinto. It has a poly-v pulley, with an electric clutch like an air-con compressor, so you can switch the pulley in or out   :)

For the first incarnation I have a 2 litre low-compression Transit engine, a Sierra EFI manifold and a Mondeo diesel intercooler. The 'charger, intercooler and EFI manifold are have circular connectors about the same size, so I'm planning to interconnect initially with silicone hoses. I'm only planning a few psi boost at first - maybe 4psi - just enough to try things out.

To run proper boost I'll have to up my game from a Transit engine of course, but this will be fun for a while.

How it goes together in an MR2:

Thanks for all the replies. Ive decided to give the Polly V thing a miss and retain the standard V belt. I am replacing the crank pulley still as the original one has a crack in it. Im getting an alloy one similar to the 4 in steel ones that Burtons sell. I will just get a standard fan and pulley for the alternator. It is a 15mm shaft version.
